Need some opinions...aluminum heads or 3.73 gears, which should I do next??

We won't get to deep into which cylinder heads to buy but let's say for now AFR 165cc's or a rear end gear change (3.73's) with a new differential (e.g. auburn, etc..)..I might change the axle's too.

Thoughts??

Thanks in advance!!

Both would be nice additions but if it were me.....I would go with the gears first........good seat of pants change........you will notice it.....and save up for the heads and upgrade intakes.......JMO.....either way ...have fun and good luck with the upgrade.....

373's :Word:

Your Stang will feel .....
A THOUSAND Pounds Lighter

Honestly ... If you did the 373's and drove it for a week
then
Replaced the gears for the heads

After the first drive with the heads

You'd be wanting your steep gears back :rlaugh:

The gears will make W A Y more of a difference you will feel my friend :nice:

gears...infact thats the only mod I might do to my car...been around and did cams, intakes and heads on cars and with stock gears they always sucked but with gears..world of difference

If it's not a DD, I'd seriously consider the 4.10s. The donor car for my 67 was a 91 LX with 347, TF heads and intake, plus a lot of other goodies. It has 4.10s and I'm keeping them(I'm prepping the 8.8 now to go under the 67). First gear was unnecessary for regular driving, but it was still pretty mild mannered on the highway in 5th. But man, when you stepped on the GO pedal, it was well worth it!

I'm seriously considering stepping up in the 95 (my DD) from the 3.08s to .373s. But I have to keep reminding myself that it's a DD. If you want seat of the pants upgrade, go gears all the way!!!

+9 on gears, although with the amt of work involved and the price difference I dont know how you came up with the choice of THOSE 2 specifically

Well, it is kind of simple...with the mods that I already have the only real big money items left are gears and heads (for a n/a motor).

Thanks for all the replies...gears it is!! But, I am undecided on 4.10 or 3.73! Damn! I do take the car to work on occassion and it is about a 70 mile round trip on the highway!

I think his point was that gears dont equal heads for how much each costs. ESPECIALLY AFR's....unless u find a killer deal on a used set. I feel like u could do the rear and nitrous for what heads cost.

Also, heads have a lot of other upgrades. Cams, lifters, push rods, roller rockers, valve covers, gaskets, a new intake, injectors, fuel pump (maybe), MAF, etc etc etc.

It is pointless to do JUST heads on these stock motors.

Good luck with the gears!!! Another option is a 3.90. I think if i did it again that would be my choice :SNSign:

I did these gears too. They were awesome lol. Especially on a vert.

Not sure what you're plan is but with my mods and 275/35/17 nitto drag radials I was well into 4th gear in the 1/8 mile at 85mph. Thats with 4:10's and the stock catted h-pipe. I did the gears back before I did the heads and what not. Now I may go back to 3:73's.

Thanks for the advice all!!
I am not sure if my signature line is visible because I got a lot of questions about my decision between gears and heads. Essentially, I have the Cobra (GT40) intake and Cobra rockers, I have a 155 lph fp, headers, 65mm throttle body, etc... all that my motor is missing is a set of heads. I have been putting off gears know for a while. Having an auburn diff, new seals/bearing, gears plus labor might be a little less than a set of aluminum heads X303 or AFR. I am looking at this as a job and not necessarily an equal cost venture. Two jobs need to be done - gears and heads! When it comes time to build a new motor then I will get a cam but it is not worth the time and money at this point! I do not go to the race track...I just like cruising!! I hope this has helped clarify my position.
I am picking up a new CAI with MAF and air inlet tube on friday so getting a set of heads will likely require fuel injectors and maybe different length pushrods..I have everything else.
