the douche bag neighbor across the street is bitching b/c he says my car is to loud. Apparently he woke up this morning when I left at 5:15 AM to go to work. He said he measured the DB's and it was at 85 at his house across the street back from the road a bit. Not sure how factual that statement is or how loud 85 DB actually is. Before I say anything else I want to make it clear that he's a whiny bitch and has complained about this since last year but since then Ive put cats on the car and its much more toned down then it was. He said hes going to call the cops the next time I leave that early and have them pull me over for having illegal exhaust :rlaugh: its got cats and mufflers I don't see how its illegal. I didn't talk to him directly he talked to the land lord which is on my side on this issue anyway. For some reason he does not want to talk to me directly and hes lucky to b/c I'll come unglued and snap on him. Anyway any suggestions or input on just how loud 85 DB is? Hes a musician so I'm sure he has sound measuring equipment.

Tell him to call the cops. You have cats and mufflers theyll tell him to go pound sand more than likely. If youre not showing your ass when you leave hes SOL.

normally I would throw the whole..go ahead call the cops thing in his face but my inspection and registration has run out :notnice: . Im just sayign F it and running it like that b/c It wont be out much longer before its up for the winter and I dont drive it every day. Thats the other thing that pisses me off is that Ive only driven it to work less then 5 times this summer and he's all pissed off. Not like its an every day thing and ITS NOT EVEN THAT LOUD

According to
Decibel (Loudness) Comparison Chart

City traffic inside car is 85db

wow thats it? Inside a car in city traffic

Some interesting items for your neighbor to note on that chart: Truck 90dB, power mower at 3 feet 107dB, and motorcycle 100dB.

I say interesting because all of those are typical noisemakers you will encounter in the same place. Sure you wouldn't run a mower that early in the morning. But you would drive a truck and motorcycle without receiving a traffic violation. And remember, the dB scale is logarithmic, so the difference between 85dB and these examples is huge.

I'd say you should be polite and apologize if the topic ever comes up, but don't give your idiot neighbor a second thought.

so he's a musician? well if you ever hear him playing go over and tell him that he's disrupting what you were doing..and mention 85Db...or you know start driving the 'stang more :nice: and tell him that this is America, and "America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, bad a$$ speed." - Eleanor Roosevelt :flag:

Its funny what people get all hung up on.

There is a guy diagnal from me that is like minded to your pest. He has gone as far to barge into the house behind me (across the street from him as I live on a corner) and bitch out the guy...who is a quadraplegic (sp?) :nonono:. I went and talked to the neighbor behind me (super nice guy too) and really what could he do...call the cops and have a guy do god knows what and when or dont do anything and just deal with some tard? This jackass has gone as far to blow leaves/grass into neighbors yards and then YELL at them to clean up their yard. Plus he thinks he is some kind of country boy , :D,, :rlaugh: since I am from "the country" I just laugh when I see him outside in what is a suburb of St. Louis.

I called the cops as he said he was going call the cops on me. When I called the Police they told me he can take a long walk off a short pier and he is PITFA and if he has an issue they would gladly tell him to pound sand on my behalf.

One day he was out tossing leaves into the park that is across the street from me and next door to him. The wife and I were leaving and I noticed him giving me a "hard" look. I just looked at him directly non stop and he quickly looked down and turned around. I pulled out of the driveway and stopped right in front of him rolled down the window and just waited for him to turn around to see if he had anything he wanted to say to my face. You guessed it...he just kept putting leaves into the park looking down at the ground. Best part is he is like 35-40 and lives at home with mom and yells/treats her like crap.

Be the neighbor and discuss it...if he will talk. I am not saying fight the idiot and get arrested. One thing I have noticed since moving from the country is people in suburbia are not in contact with people that live by them. They seem to think the police are there to babysit and deal with their lives only. Not saying you all need to be best friends/beer buddies but if there is an issue you should both be able and ADULT enough to voice yourself. Most people seem to hide behind the fact in modern suburbia people dont talk much.

He is being a tard because of his own shortcomings and the only way he can deal with it is to be a child. If he wont talk...dont worry and if the po-po does show. Be civil and show the car does have cats/mufflers and go from there. That or have a party with a lot of car buddies and leave late at night/early Sat. morning.

Here is what bothers me. It only takes a few mins for the car to warm up enough so that I can leave, I do have to rev it up to keep it from stalling when its cold but its not excessive, nothing over 1,300 RPM's, just enough to keep it going. At idle my car is not that loud b/c the lobe of the cam is so excessive that the exhaust is not that loud. Hes just one of these pricks who wants something to complain about and I would see his point IF my car was excessivly loud and I took it to work every morning. Ive taken it Id say 5 times this entire summer. He is the only one who has ever complained or said anything. He did speak w/ me once last year when the O/R H pipe was on and I agreed it was very loud and I told him I was changing the exhaust which I did I put the Catted X pipe on it, now he still complains. I found the Maine law on this issue, Im going to call the state house today and find out the exact wording of Standard J-1169 b/c that is how the test DB Levels.

Title 29-A, §1912: Mufflers

6. Exception. Subsections 1 and 3 do not apply to a muffler or exhaust system that does not emit noise in excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications outlined in standard J-1169 adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. A person served with a Violation Summons and Complaint charging a violation of subsection 1 or 3 must provide satisfactory evidence that the muffler or exhaust system does not emit a noise in excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications outlined in standard J-1169 adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. Measurements must be made by participating certified inspection stations.

haha good idea black.

I'll tell you guys what, I'll park the car in the drive way where it was yesterday morning with it idling and get some video clips and stand down across the road about where his house is so you can hear how loud it actually is. I'm sure he complains b/c of when I leave b/c my car is down on the road close to his house but its not like I take off and tach it out in 1st and second gear.

85dB isn't much and anything that guy is measuring isn't going to be accurate anyways.

If that guy wants peace and quiet, he should save up some money, get a better paying job, and plan on buying a house. Even then, a Mustang might be nearby. My car can be loud and I know my neighbors hear it. My wife hears it a couple blocks away (low drone) from outside, but not at all if she's inside.

Like said before, talk to the guy and be nice about it. You're not going to change anything, just be nice and he'll probably change his attitude quickly. If you know anything about music or playing an instrument, bring that up and you'll be on your way to shutting him up.

+1 on the comment about suburbanites not talking to each other. Not a whole lot can be done since that is where society and technology is headed. I can do all my daily business and rarely meet face to face with anyone. Sometimes you gotta go out of your way to be neighborly.

im in the same situation as you guys, and have also concluded that the complaints are stemming more from his own shortcomings than from my car. in my case its makes no sense to complain about my car when where literally next door to a fire station and under a flight path:rolleyes:

besides unless his decibel test was carried out under the controlled conditions as described in your local RCW, his "test" means NOTHING

And since he wont talk to you about it, dont talk to him about it. Explain to your landlord that its legal, per state law, and go on about your day :flag:

As to your neighbor, he just doesn't like loud anything it sounds like OR mustangs..and is a PIA

85db IS loud but probably not illegal. I know, I have NORMAL hearing and a DB meter. OSHA requires you to wear hearing protection 80 or above. 100 db is EXTREMELY loud and will cause hearing damage in minutes. Many mechanics, machine operators and car guys are desensitized to it so most of us are no authority on the subject, lol. ..and there's also the "macho" factor or "aww man that ain't loud! whats matter you a p#$$y?"

William Shattner, captain kirk on star trek thought it was too girly to go around on the set with ear plugs during minor explosions. He now has tinitis or ringing of the ears that almost drove him insane. Regardles, we are too careless with our hearing. I wear ear protections when using the mower. You are an idiot if you don't.

"Here is what bothers me. It only takes a few mins for the car to warm up enough so that I can leave, I do have to rev it up to keep it from stalling when its cold but its not excessive, nothing over 1,300 RPM's, just enough to keep it going."

A good tune should take care of this. I dont have any of these issues.

"city traffic"...maybe with a jackhammer next to you or in a old tin can. Not trying to contradict everyone or get off topic..but on "hearing" .. but someone told us guys it was sissy to realize when machinery (in general) is too loud.. a drill, lawnmower..etc and you are not a man if you take precautiuons - and we end up with hearing loss.

hmmmm, i guess i'm an idiot then.

i've been mowing my own lawn for 25 years now, and i have never used hearing protection. and my hearing seems fine to me. maybe my mower is not as loud as the others or something

sometimes my wife complains that i can't hear her, but it is usually because i am ignoring her!

LOL. No you are not an idiot..there may be other factors .. like it is quieter or you might just be doing an idiotic "thing"..but your no idiot BV. :) Now..hearing loss is gradual and no one knows how much they've lost until they have it tested.

"Noise-induced hearing loss is the second most common sensorineural hearing loss, after age-related hearing loss (presbycusis). Of the more than 28 million Americans with some degree of hearing impairment, as many as 10 million have hearing loss caused in part by excessive noise exposure in the workplace or during recreational activities.9 The economic costs of occupational hearing loss have been estimated to be in the billions of dollars.10 Noise-induced hearing loss has been well recognized since the industrial revolution. An early term for the condition was "boilermakers' disease," because so many workers who made steam boilers developed hearing loss.11 In today's noisy society, even children and young adults are at risk. A recent study found evidence of high-frequency hearing loss in nearly one third of a cohort of college students.12"

Noise is perhaps the most common occupational and environmental hazard. As many as 30 million Americans are exposed to potentially harmful sound levels in their workplaces.3 Outside of work, many persons pursue recreational activities that can produce harmful noise. Sixty million Americans own firearms, and many use them without adequate hearing protection.4 Other nonoccupational sources of noise include chain saws and other power tools, amplified music,5 and recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles and motorcycles. Some types of toys for children can produce sounds capable of causing permanent hearing damage.6

Oh and on the lawnmower..I just started using it as I have become more aware. I dont want to be wearing a hearing aid too early in life.

Nobody is a 'perfect' neighbor. Those who think they are usually have a stick up...... so anyways, being a good neighbor should be about compromise,'i let some of your stuff go, you let some of mine go'.

Many people however, think that the entire neighborhood should live by their rules and guidelines.

In many cases, most likely this one also, its never really ONLY about the car:(

And 85db IS loud, continuously over an extended period of time, which is what OSHA is concerned with.

No one is gonna go deaf because on their neighbors car, anymore so than they would because of a passing train, over-flying airplane, fourth of july celebrations etc.
