08 GT transmission noise

I dynamated the area under the center console and rear seats. It made a world of difference with the little noises that come through and the heat as well.

Dear 69mach1-409, I am confused by your posts, they seem to be contradictory. Is your transmission still noisy as hell after the dynamat? I am concerned because I am very close to installing a Hurst Shifter, and I was planning on dynamatting the whole cab so that after the install, it was actually quieter than before. It sounds like you liked the dynamat? But maybe you are still looking to make things more quiet?

My concern with the noise is that it takes away from the sound of the engine. I could get louder exhaust, or... try and reduce the tranny noise.

Also, ghedeup123, I was thinking about your problem more.. and thinking about my desire for a Hurst Shifter. In reading up on how to do the install of the Hurst, I had a thought. Could it be that the dust seal was not properly re-installed? I know some folks install the Hurst and notice no change in the tranny noise, while others notice a big change. I personally drove a V6 with a Hurst and the tranny noise was very loud. Might the loud Hursts just have improper reinstallation of the dust seal? It seems like that would block a good deal of the noise when installed properly.

Just a thought.

The dust seal is installed correctly. I had stripped out the console before taking it to the shop, and so I drove home with the dust seal clearly visible. I had it driven by another independent shop and pronounced "normal", so I guess it must be. I'm not going to waste any more time complaining about it. That's the way it is.

Sorry, been on vacation! :D

The Dynamat works great and I'm going to be applying more to the doors / rear qtrs soon. It really quieted down most noises from entering the cabin. ..but the trans is still noisey as hell outside the car. If there is something that is wrong causing it, I'd like to get it fixed. My 69's 4spd Toploader isn't as loud as my 08's.

That sucks to hear about the trans noise. My 07 GT trans is quiet as can be. Have you tried changing the fluid? I put Royal Purple Synchromax in mine and it shifts much better.

+1

I put in Redline High Temp ATF (thickest synth Mercon ATF I could find) and it shifts better. It's still noisy: lots of whirring and rattling at idle, but I cannot complain to be perfectly honest.

I think you may be right, as the dealer told me today that what I was hearing was totally normal. If so, the Ford Motor Company is indeed in trouble. My GT premium cost around $30k, granted that is with options. I have driven other cars in the same price range that did not exhibit this kind of behavior. I agree it's a V8 on wheels but surely they make a trans that doesn't sound like it's about to break.

It's a shame, because otherwise I love the car and this noise completely ruins my driving experience. The dealer pointed to the Hurst shifter, didn't know what it was but knew it was aftermarket. The noise was there before it was fitted but now is more apparent.

I'll take your advice and see what some Dynamat can do for me.

Colin

Ford is nowhere near "in trouble". The S197 is leaps and bounds ahead of the previous generation Mustangs in terms of quality control and overall ride comfort and noise reduction.

You're going to hear noises with any aftermarket shifter however, the MGW is probably the best bet all around.

The dynamat suggestion is excellent and works great. I'm buying some myself.

Don't know how many times I'm gonna have to say this but the noise was there BEFORE the Hurst shifter was fitted, just that now it is even more easier to hear. I'm not blaming the aftermarket shifter at all.

I also said if it's normal I'll live with it, as I do enjoy the car otherwise, but it seems strange to me that some posters here are saying their cars are quiet while others are saying they are noisy.

I have a 07 Mustang, and I too have noise coming from my transmission, actually my whole driveline makes noise. The noise maybe "normal" when it comes to what Ford says, but for me it is unacceptable.
I had a 93 Mustang LX 5.0, and the T-5 in it was far less noisey and shifted better. It seems that ever since Ford started using Tremecs in the Mustangs, they have been worse than my T-5 was. The Tremec in my 99 Mustang made a bad noise when I would shift into reverse. Unless I shifted into one of the forward gears first it would make that noise. Ford then too told me it was normal, even though my T-5 that had over 100,000 miles never made that noise.
Tremecs are good, but when you have Ford saying hey we want you to make our trannys, but we only want to pay this much for them, Tremec is going to cut corners.
And what ever made them go to a two piece drive shaft. The CV joints in it are so lose, I think I am getting some of my noise from it.

Tremec's manuals are all Hencho en Mexico (Made in Mexico). The problem is, the Big 3's performance cars with manuals will all use Tremecs.

The Corvette, Z06, Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR, Ford GT500, Challenger SRT-8 (09 w/ manual) use the TR-6060.

You'll have to look at Japanese or German performance cars, which usually have much better gearboxes (Getrag, ZF, etc...)

The Germans and Japanese take details/precision very seriously. The North American culture is generally more laid-back, lazy and interested in sports more than anything else, and this has definitely shown in the education system where there is more emphasis on football/soccer/basketball trophies rather than a combination of athletic abilities and scholastic achievements.

Just a thought for the original poster. I too thought my new 08's tranny was a little noisy and hard to shift when cold. At about 3500 miles I switched it over to Mobil 1's new multi vehicle synthetic fluid. It meets the Mercon V spec and made a big difference in shift quality. It also seems to have a little less general gear noise than before. Might be worth a try. It holds 3.2 quarts. :nice:

So the Mobil 1 meets all the warranty requirements? I put synthetic in my previous Mustang's gearboxes (90 GT and 95 Cobra) and noticed an improvement in both of them...I'd definitely be into changing to synthetic in my 08' if it wouldn't void the warranty (I've read somewhere that Tremec says to NOT use synthetic??).

Yes, the previous Mobil 1 ATF already met Mercon / Dex II / Dex III requirements. Mobil 1 ATF as of 2004/2005 met Mercon-V as well as the previous requirements. I use it in my 4R70W and all of my power steering systems.

Our TR-3650 is supposed to use Mercon ATF, but the manual does not say anything about NOT using synthetic. Tremec claims non-synth ATF is the only stuff to use only because they tested/designed the 3650 using non-synth ATF.

I've been running Redline High Temp ATF (the thickest synthetic Mercon ATF I could find) for about 7k+ miles without any problems. I find that it actually shifts better when it is cold, I can feel the shifter slip into place as I row it through the gates.

I saw nothing in the manual about not using synthetic in the transmission. I too am using the new Mobil 1 multi vehicle ATF which says it meets Mercon V specs. It does shift much smoother especially when cold so I'm going to risk it. My guess is if I run into problems who is going to do a UOA on the fluid? It thin and pink and looks just like Ford fluid!

Funny you should mention the rear axle 69mach. Mine has a slight under power gear whine from 65-75 mph. I haven't tried Mobil 1 in the rear end yet and wonder if it would help. I sure hate to tear into it under warranty if this is common on these cars. Anyone else have a little whine?
