can a new edge still be fun with a auto in it?

i'm looking at getting back into mustangs and am looking to buy a new edge or other used v8 mustang 87 to 04.

i would rather have a 5 speed as i know thay are just much funner to drive.
but my wife really wants me to get a auto as she does not know how to drive a stick and is to stubborn to learn.

i'm looking to turn the stang into a fun weekend toy that runs low to mid 12's
(maby a little faster:D)

so my ? is how hard is it to make a auto perform at that kind of power levels?
would the auto hold up? or would i need to invest all kinds of cash in it.
can a auto still be fun?
i know autos a usaly slower

i whant the wife to be happy with the car also and be able to drive it SOMETIMES also but not at the cost of the goals.

shift kit/jmod, tune, stall will make the auto a bit more enjoyable than stock form.

I got the sct3 tuner, and without any mods to your car. the tuner will give you awesome and FIRM transmission shifts. I wish I got it for my car years ago! its totally worth it. NOT SLUGGISH AT ALL. A tranny cooler ($60 bucks) and you can bang on the gears if you want and drive from 2 to 1 to D its fun! Although if you are gonna be doing that I would also recommend the shift kit and jmod.

Automatics just suck...............
Except when you gotta drive 50 miles a day through heavy traffic
for 10 years day after day.......... then all of a sudden they seem really fun  Plus its way easier to drink coffee while driving. :D

if you plan to have this car as a nice smooth cruiser, i would also go with a convertable, nothing bad about having an auto and cruising Pacific coast highway.

as far as a 5-speed, of course its fun, but not so much in traffic, but your from new mexico, so....i cant imagine there being traffic there since its kinda a dead beat state.

Mines an auto and I like it.
I had a 5 speed last time, but it was tough in traffic.
I mostly just hit cruises, so auto is nice.
Plus the wife won't drive a 5 speed, so the auto works
(especially after a couple of beers when she can drive home)

Well, is the wife a car girl? If so I would suggest taking her for a ride in an auto car and then in a manual car. That did it in real quick for my ex-gf. Now my fiance is a different story. lol. I just bought the manual trans car and knew she would learn if she wanted to drive it, just plan on a clutch. It all depends more on what you are willing to live with. As the guys said, the auto can be built up nice and stout but some just enjoy rowing the gears themselves. Anyway ya go it should be a fun car. Good luck.

You can make your automatic perform just as well as a manual. In fact, an automatic should be more reliable and easier on the rear end, tires and other driveline componets.

In contrast to other posters in this thread, my fun car is an automatic and my daily driver is a manual. Manuals just have that fun factor. It doesn't matter if the car is slow, it's just fun to slam gears. We don't have such terrible traffic here, so I enjoy my manual quite a lot.

I also love the automatic in my fun car. It doesn't shock load the tires and drivetrain, so fewer broken parts and it just goes.

I love my auto. I went mid 11s with a BONE STOCK auto, down to the tranny cooler. A blower, gears, and exhaust will get you mid-low 12s pretty easily.

Since I added the stall and built the tranny and along with some extra boost my car is pretty damn peppy and fun to drive plus it runs in the 10s too.

If you don't want anything crazy a 3200-3600 stall and 4.10s would be a fun car to putt around in.

I bought an auto so my wife could drive it. Now with the few mods I've done, she won't drive it anyway. But I'm not sorry I bought it. It's fun beating the guys with sticks on the drag strip and watching their blood boil. Driving on the street can be fun when you lay into it. It kicks down and breaks the tires loose. Just be careful when changing lanes to pass.
