About 9 months ago I had a Zoom MF clutch put in along with a bbk clutch cable.. When I first picked up the car I had to press the clutch cable in as hard as i could to force it in gear... So later I ordered a Ford racing FWA which helped a lot. But I still have problems once in a while and my clutch cable will making squeaking sounds and it sounds catchy and is not smooth at all when i press it in. Sometimes it will be smoother then other times but still not great... I've heard of ppl using stock cables with aftermarket clucth? Should I buy a OEM cable and quadrant?

...cheaper than a clutch. Have you inspected any of it? Flashlight, mirror and a good set of eyes may find something you didn't expect.

My MM cable/fwa/quadrant made my clutch feel like a hydraulic after swapping out the original

 Hefeweisen :nice:

yea i'll try and take a good look tomorrow.. Another thing tho, I believe it does feel even more crappier after a rain, or washing my car.. Maybe the cover around the cable is cracked somewhere.. who know's I'll have to get under the car tomorrow.

I agree completely.
And I think MM even lowered the price since we bought ours.

Do check the cable as mentioned. The cable needs to make a big arc - if it has any sort of tight bend, pushing the clutch will feel like your stomach would after supergluing your butt closed before a Mexican food dinner.

The cable would be a wise investment (if you dont have a nice stocker) and if you dont have an aftermarket quadrant, you will want to pick one up. The stress from the hard declutching, added with age, means your plastic quadrant/pawl might not last too long.

Good luck.

As of now it has a BBK cable and some other quadrant since the bbk one didnt have a very good dbl hook on it. I got under the car just now and the cable looks fine. But is still very firm to press in and makes a ton of noise. I took the cover off at the tranny where the cable goes into the fork and I noticed the cable was brown and looked rusty where it comes out of the case for it. Im thinking maybe the cable possibly got oil on it when i had valve cover leaks... I think i'm going to order that set up from MM now.

If you want to go through the hassle, disconnect the cable at both ends. Then see if it slides through its sheath easily.

No matter what, you'll be happy with the MM products anyhow.

The universal cable is longer than stock. That allows it to make an even greater arc (good) and keeps it further away from headers (good).

If your friend has LT's on his Fox III, he'd like the extra length.

when i swapped in the 5spd i got a kit from dallas mustang with an adjustable cable and it sucked. had the same problem you were having and going to the mm cable worked 20x better. already had a firewall adjuster.

i'm hoping its just the cable, which i'm pretty sure it is. I already orederd the cable kit from MM so as soon as i put it in i'll let you guys know whats up.

Im in the process of putting in the MM adjustable cable and I'm trying to figure out how it connects to the fork.. It doesnt have threads on it like my old one. It just seems like it is gonna have play sliding on the fork.. any ideas?

Well I have it all in and working now.. But the clutch engages at the bottom and I want to move it to the top.. Which way do I need to turn the FWA?

As you stand at the front of the car and look towards the rear, turn the FWA counterclockwise (loosen it). This makes the sheath 'longer', which pulls the slack out, moving the point of engagement closer to the top of the pedal.

Tangent question: Did you have a clip on your clutch cable where it attaches to the fork?

I'll go work on that adjustment.... A clip? Here is a pic of it... If you look at the end where it goes into to the fork it just drops in, and doesnt thread tight.. But i figure with the slack out it won't go anywhere?

But the clutch feels hydraulic now. It's 10x easier to push in then it ever was. I can't believe it. No more sore leg!

Glad you like the feel. I have a stiff PP and that cable makes it bearable.

I think you should have had a little circlip that goes on the end of the cable. It just keeps the cable hooked if you every got a lot of slack in the cable for some reason.

79-04 RETAINING CLIP, CLUTCH CABLE MUSTANG

Once the slack is out, the cable should not be able to pull out of the fork anyhow.

OK , yea I didn't get a new clip but I had my old one and used it to clip that plastic part around the cable to the Trans? or w/e its on and that won't move.. I was just curious about the end that actually holds to the fork.. But I understand now. If the slack is out in won't go anywhere anyways... Duh. But thanks HISSIN50 for always answering my questions!
