I recently bought and installed the Pypes X-pipe/Violator combo. Is it me or is it sound loud and like a bad import exhaust at about 3k rpms. I got these from a site that wants me to pay about 150 dollars just to ship them back to return them. When I rev the engine from about 1-2 k it sounds mean but from 3-5 it goes loud and makes an ear piercing whiney sound. I'm thinking this is mainly the muffler?? Or is the X-pipe to blame. Is there anything I can add to make this sound lessen or stop, or do I just need to cough up the money and get a better muffler?? I hear the Bassani or Borla's are great but I didn't want to cough up that much cash.
Thanks

I don't own either peice, but from what I've learned about X pipes, they scream when revved versus an H pipe that will produce bellow. The violator muffler is also a straight through design that would give similar sound characteristics that an X is known for. Raspy/fart sounding in my opinion.

I have the Pypes o/r H pipe matched up to a Bassani Race AB and it's got a nice deep throaty tone with just a hint of trumpeting at 2800 to 3000 rpms.

I say this because I helped a friend install an Pypes o/r X on his bone stock 07 and it def had a bit of scream to it even with stock mufflers. Sucks costs $150 to ship kit back but hey, at least you saved that much by installing it yourself!

Violators and an X pipe sound like ass. When I drive with my windows open I try not to get on it at all, and sometimes it's embarrasing lol.

The problem is the muffler. Violators are not a good muffler to run with an X. Some mufflers sound good with an H, some good with an X. Running the wrong muffler is why a lot of people have the bad opinions on how X pipes sound. A straight through muffler like a Magnapack, Bassani Race, Borla Stinger, MBRB, or Pypes M80 will sound better.

I don't think any muffler made by Pypes sounds good. I've heard every single muffler they make for the S197 including the V6 model and they all sound horrible. I recommend going with with something like UrbanRedneck is recommending.

Yeah it's so loud when I get on it, I don't even want to gas it anymore. I'm going to throw that thing on ebay and try and get a bassani or borla. The borla is about 100 bucks more is it worth it ? I also heard headers helps get rid of that loud raspy sound.

.....or you could just run a H-pipe, which would be cheaper than buyin new mufflers

My buddy has an '09 GT with Magnaflow exhaust. (Mufflers & X pipe) When he blows by me at WOT it sounds deep & mean. That's the sound I wanted. I bought the Violator axle backs and left the modified Bullitt specific H pipe on just to see. I got in his car and had him blow by me at WOT and it sounded just like his. I left it that way. I'm guessing from my own personal experience you need an H pipe not X with the Violators. Others have their own opinions but mine sound really really good at any RPM. Check out the link under my sig to hear 'em. Good luck:D

That H pipe sounds really good. I'm shocked at how the pipe bent a little different changes the sound so much. Either way I need to fix this before I go def. The X pipe was annoying to install because of the cats being on the way of the bolts origanally but it should be a lot easier to get off. Are there any H pipes that will bolt right up to stock exhaust? I know must muffler shops won't touch off road stuff in Cali since they're illegal.

I'm sure NastyStang113 will chime in, but won't the magnapacks trumpet a little as well with the X, or are you thinking of the regular Magna mufflers?

Yes they will trumpet. I hear that long tubes will fix it but I can't confirm. I'm going to be going with a set of Kooks or American Racing longtubes eventually and I'll let you know how it works out. I think I'd go with the regular Magnaflow mufflers if you are concerned with drone and trumpeting.

So I had some extra time on my hands today and pulled off the pypes o/r x pipe. I then put my violators back on with an H pipe. It sounds so much better. Hard to beleive the X pipe made so much annoying damn noise. It could be a little louder but it sounds good with the combo I have now for the price.

It's not the X pipe or the muffler individually. AN X pipe sounds awesome with the right muffler, whereas an H pipe sounds good with the right muffler, mix them up and you get bad. Personally I prefer the smoother sound of an X compared to the crackly, droning, redneck pickup truck sound of an H, but with the correct muffler. But if it is the loudness that gets you, most any muffler will be just as loud, the lack of cats is why it is so loud. But a better sound would make the loudness less annoying. Either way, glad you got it sorted out for now.

Now, I have always wondered, what exactly do you guys mean by trumpeting?

Trumpeting is exactly that. At about 3500 rpms it sounds like someone is blowing a trumpet as loud as they can and it's coming from my exhaust.:D I have literally had people yelling through there windows that my car sounded like $hit.

We have an emissions/aircare program up here, so it'll be a catted mid pipe for me + I'm getting a lil older now, so loud I don't need/want anymore. A classy note is where it's @, and a bit more volume wouldn't hurt. Also having a drop top is also a concern. I would love a catted x with magnapaks.
