mach-1 restoration hours 1-18 - updated

Well, I guess new quarter panels are probably the way to go here….

I had the car media blasted.

It’s been 20 years since the last time I “fixed” the mustang. In many ways I am glad that drunk hit the car. Now I have to fix this piece of history correctly. I had completely forgotten how I had stitched the quarters up. Yeah 17 year olds shouldn’t be braising and stitching cars together huh? Skins clearly won’t be the correct fix here.

It is just going to be faster to put whole quarters on. Yikes!

I really did a good job on this side. At least now they make parts...back then you just had to improvise. Which I did to varying degrees of success (obviously)

I have also decided to replace the entire floor as well after assessing the entire condition of the floors. Like many mustangs the history of mine was a Mach-1 351w which was converted into an all out race car. A typical transmission tunnel cut had been made to move the shifter into a better location for whomever owned the car at some point. I have seen this so many times before.

Ugly floors.

I am at hour 8

1-3 = Teardown removal of all electrical, interior and trim items.
4-5 = Engine, exhaust, brake and fuel lines removed as well as the deck lid and doors.
6-8 =Welding, grinding and preparation for new front end – Installation of radiator mount.

I should be able to finish the inner fender walls and start prepping and painting the front suspension, complete the removal of the rear end, sand paint and re-install on Sunday.

Todays work.
