i asked a local shop about a gear install and they said about 900 with the parts. so i was going to order my own parts. and im going to get the FRPP 4.10's and so i need the install and bearing kit. should i also get the LOK rebuild kit? but 900 sounds kinda expensive. how did you guys do it and how much did you pay? i just dont wanna get screwed.

You don't need the rebuild kit (unless you've got 150K+ miles).

All you need are the gears themselves and the install/bearing kit. I bought my gears, bearing kit, and diff fluid from AM for about $250. I paid $260 for the install. So I paid a grand total of $510 for everything. $900 is almost double, Eff that!

900 is crazy but I would expect to pay around 550 or more and that is including parts minus the speedo recalibration or tuner. If you have the tuner then that will be big but personally I would not do a gear swap without getting the odometer and the speedometer close to accurate. I also would not use the RP that american muscle has in their kits either.

With the gears, Trak-Loc rebuild kit, bearings, seals, all that stuff, and all the miscellaneous stuff (fluids, etc.), I was quoted $750-$800 for parts and labor by 4 different shops. So I don't think that $900 is so terribly high. I did find another guy that would do it for about $250 less, but that's because he's a good friend of one of my friends.

So I'd say $750 for parts and labor is the norm, but you can get it done for a couple hundred less if you know someone.

And FWIW, on all the quotes I got from the shops around here, their prices for the parts were cheaper than I could buy myself.

ok i talked to the guy at the shop about installing gears and installing full exhaust and for labor it came out to about 1200. how does that sound? and so if i buy all the parts myself. im looking at 4.10's and i need the install and bearing kit, and the LOK rebuild kit and probably pay for fluid as well. and exhaust i want Mac LT's with o/r pro chamber and borlas. so for the exhaust and tell me if this doesnt sound right but 1 5/8 headers, the off road mid pipe and axle back borla kit? and note that this is the only place ive got a quote from. there is another place that i can think of that can do it but they dont have an email and that my only form of contact right now from afghanistan. but if anyone knows a place in the des moines iowa area let me know. id appreciate it.

You might also clarify that you mean long tubes with the full install. If it is gears, lt's and the exhaust for 1200 I would that that is a good deal. I have seen shops overcharge for long tubes more than gears and just for long tubes I've heard of quotes more than half of the 1200. Just for install.

yeah i clarified with them that i want long tubes. they even posted my email to them what i wanted on the quote sheet, about the gears and long tubes and pipe and exhaust install. but i was wondering would it be something that i could do myself. like install my own exhaust anyway. and just let them do the gears? just trying to think of ways to save my hard earned cash. they also said if i pay in cash they will knock off $53

long tubes can be done yourself. but are/can be a bitch.

i would love to get some longtubes myself because i live near my parents and they have a 2 post lift in their garage. they make LT installs (along with everything else of course) a million times easier. the problem is that i has no monies :(

def pay in cash if they are willing to knock off 53 bucks...but that 53 bucks might have been calculated with all that work in mind.

so have big of a pain in the ass are we talkin. like what would be a timeline considering i dont have a lift or anything like that. and can i install the rest of the exhaust myself? and im looking for just an axle back borla system and the only thing i can find is catback systems. anybody know where i can get what im looking for?
