I'm in the market for some new tires and I've already decided on a set of 4 275/40/18's to replace my 275/35/18's. Yes I already know that the tire is bigger and that it will affect my gear ratio. I already have 3.73's and with over 550hp I'm getting no traction. I'm hoping to accomplish a few things with the 40's. 1) help fill the gap in the wheel well. 2) help raise the car a little just enough to make it so my car doesnt scrape every time i come home and have to drive over a huge speed bump. 3) To help lower my gear ratio a tad to (since i wish either left it stock or put 3.55's in instead). I already have a tune to adjust for the tire size, so no issue there.

I'm just looking for photos to see how much it helps feel the wheel well. I've seen a few photos, but from back angles and such. I'm hoping to see photos from all sides. If you have any please post.

Good luck finding that tire on a Mustang

You mean good luck finding it on a pre 2004 Mustang correct? Since the 2005 Mustangs come with a 40 sidewall tire stock.

Actually I've found a few threads with pictures of 275/40/18's but on pre 99 models. I found those from google. They actually looked pretty good. I want to find pics on my year model as well as from the rear and sides. I know there's photos and I know there are threads on here about it, but I just cant find them. All searches come up black since the search excludes 275 40 18 or even 275/40/18 as a search. Its near impossible to do a search on the forums for a tire size thread. Kinda sucks though, I wish forums didn't have that 4 character minimum to search.

I bet if you get a good set of 22's it will help out.

This is a little like the whole "band-aid over a gun shot wound." Adding more rotating mass to the rear axle of a high hp car is not a good idea. I would recommend spending the $200 for a different gear, or keep the same size tire and buy something more aggressive.

Thanks for the info, but I'm sticking with my decision to get that tire size. I plan on getting 4 of the all the way around my car, I just wanted to see photos of how it looks since I wont be buying the tires for a month or two. Changing gears is way more than $200. $200 is just for the gears labor is about $400. There is nothing wrong with going a little bigger on the sidewall. If ford can do it on the newer model then why wont it work on ours. The only difference is a different look and more weight on the 05+ models.

i found some pics that I figured I'd post up for people. If anyone finds more please post. I spent hours on google just to find these. The cars look good too.

Well....yeah. Since this isn't the S197 forum I figured you wanted to see them on SN95 or new edge cars

Yeah I did. Your original post just said on any mustang which is why i asked that question to double check. Not everyone knows the s197's have 40s up front. Ford decided to give the car a little more sidewall for some reason or another.

Just sayin.. That 40 isn't a unit of measurement like the width of the tire. It represents the percentage of the width of the tire that the sidewall is. So on a 275/40, the sidewall is 40% of 275 mm and thus different than the 235/40 that Ford later put on the 05+.

ANYWAYS..I think the pics you have posted of the 275/40's look fine.

What size wheels are you running? If you have an aftermarket set that are wider than the stock 8" then why not get a little more tire under the rear?

I'm running a 295/40/18 on the rear and 255/45/18 on front.

Your car looks good. I like how the tires fill up the gap. I would but I only have 9 in rims, so I figured I'd keep it 275 all the way around like i have now. It also lets me rotate which is helpful.

275.40.18 on 18x9 on all 4 corners, its not a bad size. I'm now running 295/35/18 and 275/35/18 and I need to go lower, looking to swap my Eibach Pro-kit for some H&R SS.

Sweet looking car! I want that hood! I'm actually buying that hood very soon cant wait.

If i went with a bigger tire such as a 295 or 315 I would have gone with a 35 ratio for sure. Since I'm limited by my 9 in rim I plan on keeping it at 275. I'd rather not have any side bulging and such.

I just bought 4 new 275/40/18 tires. BFG KDW2's. I got a hella of a deal on them too, the guy was selling them on ebay dirt cheap and was near by. I only paid $580 for all 4. Sweet deal.

I'll have them installed tomorrow and pics posted up soon after.

Before lowering the car, remove the cobra emblems.

Thanks, but I prefer not to. A cobra emblem doesn't mean anything. People who own cobra's take it to seriously. All a cobra emblem means is that your engine was hand built by ford. Whoopty do. My car was hand built as well and its faster than all cobra's in stock form. Even all pullied 03-04 cobras, just maybe not whippled ones.

On top of that cobra owners don't really drive there car they just admire it because its a rare cobra model. If i wanted to admire a car I would go visit Jay leno's Garage. The cobra emblem is just a public way of telling other people that you have a faster car than a GT. Same thing goes with a GT emblem. It's just a public way of saying your car is faster than a pony emblem. Ever since I put on those cobra emblems, I got rid of all those racer type people from trying to race me. I don't street race and all those that do only do it to people they know they have a chance with. When they see the cobra emblems they think, never mind and don't even bother. I don't even get GT mustangs trying to race me anymore. The only racing I do is at the track when i go. You can do what you want with your car, and I'll do what I want with mine. I bought it for a reason, to enjoy and custom make it the way I want to.
