Cannot Decide

I cannot decide what to do! I have located a 351w for very little money but I also would like to go turbo on my 95 GT. I am not looking for something that is a monster 6 million thousand horsepower, I would be happy with around 4-450 and still be very happy on the street because is is my daily driver. The 351w I know as of right now it will need freshing up(bearings, rings, etc) but not sure if it will need machining. Maybe stroker? Now going turbo I know a lot of the drivability is in the tune and the longevity as well. I am also on a very strict budget per wife and 2 kids. Which of these would be the most economial as this very moment. Any opinions from anyone with experience with one or both situations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think I'd start with the 351.
I'd blow it apart and take it to the machine shop and have them check it out,and go from there recomendations..
A warmed up 351 with a good cam, heads and intake would be night and day different compared to the stock 5.0. Once it's up and running you could take time to map out a turbo setup and all the supporting mods-tune etc

if efi it could be expnsive but carbed you could get the edelbrock top end kit with a rebuilt bottom end and you would have 450 horses with no poer adder

Thank you for our input. Who has the best deal on a decent set of 351w heads and intake? I have searched a great deal online and for a few but now sure if they are worth it. (302 parts make 302 power) I found these:

https://lmr.com/item/SVE-6049A-K/SVE-Mustang-Performance-Aluminum-Cylinder-Heads-79-95

But I am afraid they will not be enough for a 351w. The main other question I cannot find an answer to is will it fit under my stock hood or does this car use the same mounts as everything else?( didn't know if the conv. mounts were different).

same mounts as 5.0. there are dropped solid motor mounts but for best ride bolt on cowol hood. as for engine issue those heads will not support huge numbers on hp but will make great torque . with what you want to do i wuould go this route cobra or lightning heads, cobra or other direct fit rockers 1.7, lightning lower and cobra upper. it will recreate the cobra r engine and install an on3 turbo and you will make nice hp

So what you are saying is using a gt40 top end? I thought about that but would that be enough flow or would that choke the 351? Would a TFS stage one cam be ok? Piston to valve clearance? Or would having a custom cam ground be the way to go? Sorry for all the questions I have read so many forums now I cannot keep them straight!!!!

I would stay away from those SVE heads. You can usually find good deals on a good set of used AFR 185's or Trick Flow equivalent for that price. Add a mild street cam to that on a stock 351 and you will have all the power you need for a daily driven street stang.

if you are runnin. efi you would need a cam with at least a 115 degree lsa. that way you can use the stock computer. your best bet would be a custom cam with an emphasis on exhaust. you can use a aftermarket intake but a gt40 intake would sit lower and if you port it it could flow better. also it will accept a 70 mm throttle body

Here is what I am thinking and ya'll can tell me if I am wasting my time. My thought was to just have the stock heads worked over(port polish valves etc). Would that be just as well as a gt40 type head?
Would I be saving any more money doing it this way?

One other question I have is will a tko transmission directly replace the t5 I currently have or will I need to buy a whole kit? I know the t5 wont live behind the 351 very long but hope it will last long enough for me to save for a tko.

bell housings are different and depending on which model (one tko500 has 10 spline input) a new clutch, fork and driveshaft. you can sell the tko and have astro performance or g force build yours. they can build you one to work with your rear en gears and engine torque rating

Stock 351 flywheel will be fine. I'm running the BBK 1 3/4 351w swap longtubes and they work fine in my 95. Only thing I had to do was lightly "massage" the #5 primary tube for steering shaft clearance. I'm personally not a fan of turbos, so my vote is the 9.5 deck!

That is good to know that I can use the stock flywheel. I am still waiting on my motor. The gentleman I am getting it from still has to pull it out. He is a very busy guy to say the least. I don't think he will let me help him. I would think I should have it in a week or 2. I am not in hurry anyway. I will try and get some pictures or it and my car if I can figure out how to do that.

If you need any advise about dropping a 351 based engine in I got you. I'm in the end stages of finishing up my 408w build.
I am going to need all the help I can get. This will be my first engine swap so I hope I picked a fairly simple one. It will also be the first engine I have rebuilt by my self. I will take my time and make sure everything is put together correct and torqued correctly. This car is my daily driver and it has to be reliable. I guess we will see.

I received my engine today. I am pretty excited about starting this project! I have to find an engine stand and a cherry picker to get this thing home. I will get pictures as soon as I can figure out how to upload them.
