Best Course Of Action For Hole In The Floorpan On The Passenger Side?

I'm not too sure if this goes here.

Anyways, we have a 1995 Convertible v6 that we are trying to get in daily-driver shape. We already pulled the front seats and the rear seats from the junkyard, have the carpet and the plastic trims ready to install but there is a big rusted through hole that we have only a slight idea on how to tackle.

The hole starts from the back area to the first bend in the floor pan with a smaller hole up ahead. Provided a picture (not my car obvs) of how it is roughly. The big red square is the hole that we need to cut out as it's rusting away, and the small yellow circle is the rust spot.

We have someone who can do the welding and can get some metal for it but i'm not sure how exactly that is gonna work with this small space. Any ideas?

The drivers side also has some patches where it has started to rust, can i just clean this out, sand them to get rid of the rust and be good?

Edit: We were also planning on bolting the seats through drilled holes...would this not work?

Rust holes have to be cut out as you know and surely an experienced member can chime in and help you, I will say you can't just pop a couple holes in the floor for a seat and not have failure soon after, there is extra material there to help hold the seat.
Can you snap some pics of the actual damage?

Replacement floor pans for SN95 mustangs seem to be a little bit of a challenge to find.

You will need to cut out the area and replace it obviously.

I've replaced fox floor pans before, it's relatively simple. You would use the same procedures I've done for them.

Let me do a little research after work tonight, I'll try to find a replacement panel for you.

After that, I can walk you through it. It really isn't difficult.

In the end, if we can't find new replacements, you may need to go to a salvage yard and cut out what you need. I'll try to find out if Ford still sells them today though.

I tried searching for them too and all I found was floorpans for older cars up to 93

If it comes down to cutting it out there are a lot of mustangs at our local junkyard
 
Ok, I looked around for some new replacements for you.

This may sound odd, but check your local Ford dealerships parts department. Apparently there are still some floorboards for SN95's out there! Who knew?:shrug:

They won't be cheap though. What i found is for one side, meaning in example, the passenger side floor pan or the driver's side floor pan. The price i saw was roughly $320. Ouch!

It would be FAR cheaper for you to go to a salvage and have them cut you out what you need.

Is it just the rear seat footrest area that's rotted? Look all the way up to the firewall to be sure. Then there is the crossbrace the front seat's front mount attaches to. How does it look? They have that part as well if you need it. My '83 needs both sides and the crossmember.

Show some picture of the rest of the floor pan, towards the front of the vehicle too please.

Here's the picture of the whole pan up towards the front. I also attached some of more rust in the back seat area. I'm thinking a patch up with sheet metal would be best here since it is not something that people stand one. Would that be best?

And the drivers side is showing some of what I hope is just surface rust. How would I fix this so it doesn't keep getting worse?


I'm going to get the floor pan from the junkyard since it will be cheapest. Already have the tools, but how much should I cut?

I don't know if you need to flange, maybe just overlap about .5-1" with the "new" panel.

If the yard cuts it out, just have them cut through the front seat brace and across the front of the brace. Have them cut into the rocker about an inch up on the side.

You'll want to be able to drill out the rocker to floor spot welds yourself. You'll do a much neater job.

Also on the back side were it rises into the rear seat area have them cut like the trans tunnel, up about three inches.

Again, that's so you can cut the spot welds were the floor attaches yourself.

If they want to cut a larger piece than that, take it. Don't take a smaller piece though. Trimming it to fit is easy enough, not having enough is a bad thing.

As for the rust spots that aren't rotted through. Go over them with a knotted wire wheel to clean the scale off first. Get a rust converter and put it on them and let it dry. Sand that off to see if you have more rust, if you do, repeat with the converter. I used POR 15 on my '86 floor pans to cover the bare metal after that. That works really well for sealing the area up.

Sand blasting is an option, but messy.

When it comes time to cut your floor board, i'll show you a bit more. Fact is, pm me when you get your new piece, i can call you and talk you through it. Remember to post pictures that I can reference while we talk.

So I've been looking around for a salvage yard and I'm getting high prices for it... like 300 dollars high :bang: So I will have to keep searching around. I'm not sure if shipping is an option for these things lif i can't find anything in my area (Eastern NC)

All you got to keep in mind is nothing's easy, nothing's cheap and all it takes is money.

In the end, if they're the only locals with the floorboard, it'll be hard to get a better price (including shipping) from some place else.

Check Craigslist for someone parting one out as well.

They asked me what part I wanted and I explained it to them.

How much would be fair for that piece? There is a car on Craigslist and they are asking me to name a price but I don't know what is fair.

I would think to offer a hundred and see what they think of that. Because of the difficulty of getting one in your area, i might pay as high as $200 when it gets down to it. Just don't tell them that, work it, you'll get a deal.
 
Well, I got home Thursday to a car with metal plates in it. My stepdad apparently was getting a welder to put plates in while I was looking for the floor pan :dammit:

oh well, I guess I can't do anything about it now but make sure it's water tight. I was hoping to keep this car for awhile but now who knows lmao

side note, the top on this thing is tearing all over the place
