Engine Distributor Delete!

Ok, so may be a bit unconventional, i have a standalone, wanting to delete distributor and go coilpacks. Has anyone had any luck with a camshaft synchronizer, if so what one if any can be a drop in replacement.

The PIP sensor inside the distributor not only trigger the ignition, it is also used by the computer to time the fuel injectors.

The later 5.0 pushrod explorers had EDIS with OBDII and a different timing cover that used a crank mounted timing trigger. In order to get that to work, you would need to replace the computer and wiring harness with one from an explorer and modify it to fit. Unless you have considerable electronic or automotive electrical experience, this is not a practical task to undertake.

The other alternative is a Mega Squirt system, but again, that is not a job for the faint hearted.

Right, i have a MS3 on hand. Thats why im going this way. Figured, i have the computing power might as well use it to the fullest.
 
Shoot ms3 can do individual coils. You should order the 'vr sensor and toothed wheel from diy comes as a kit ready for the ms3. Then wire the coils directly from the harness.

Assuming your does sequential ign. If not the the edis8 swap will work great. Still need the wheel.

EDIS is pretty simple for fox mustangs. I salvaged an EDIS module from a 94 Crown Victoria, distributor stub ( cam sensor ) from a 1997 5.0 Explorer, and coil packs from same vehicle.

I haven't changed my car over yet...still need to order the trigger wheel.

I have an extra 8" diameter 36-1 trigger wheel I never used If that is what you're looking for, let me know.

Hmm...very interesting.

Are you doing this with the stock ECU or with an aftermarket ECU setup?

With a MSPNP2 but it can be done with the stock computer. The EDIS8 module times the spark by reading the cam sensor in the distributor hole. Not real complicated. This is what's needed- minus trigger wheel and crank sensor

Just did some reading up on this. Seems pretty straightforward. Might have to add this is a project down the road when I finally step up to a aftermarket ECU (or just want to tinker with the A9L)

Pretty much had everything in here

TFI SPOUT to EDIS SAW (pin 3)
TFI PIP to EDIS PIP (pin 1)
TFI Ground to Ground (pin 7 or 10 or both)
TFI Ignition On to EDIS Ignition On (pin 6)
TFI yellow/tan tach signal to EDIS pin 2

Coils A-B-C-D --> EDIS Pins 8,9,11,12
Crank Sensor --> EDIS Pins 4,5, and shield goes to 7.

Yes, i have ms3 pro. Using LS coils, with a trigger wheel, wanting to find out if a CPS from an newer 5.0 with drop in as a replacement for distributor for oil pump and cam senser. Just seeing what my options are, engine is out getting ready for a rebuild.
P.S probably not the typical car on here but the 302 is in a 240sx drift car.

In researching this, it seems the EDIS8 can function fine without the cam position sensor, and just rely on the crank sensor. SO what is the point of getting the explorer unit? Just to drive the oil pump? I don't see where it gets wired into the EDIS8 unit at all according to the wiring diagram in post #11....at least if sticking with an A9L setup.

Exactly right it's not used in the conversion wiring, but is required to fill the distributor hole and drive the oil pump.
Depending on the ems used the cam sensor can be used for sequential options. Even if the edis8 is not utilized.
