Back in a Mustang

Hello everyone. I used to have a 6 cylinder back in the day and just recently bought an old 96 GT to restore. I am already aware of a couple of mods I want to start off with such as the PI head upgrade, and gear swap, but what other small things can I do to get her moving faster haha. Anyone know of any good places to source the heads? The interior and paint need a lot of work but I am looking forward to it all! I will post pics when I get a chance.

Don't bother with the PI heads, just go with the Trick Flow 185 Twisted Wedge heads. They have the intake valve angle corrected in the casting and are the best heads you can get for the 4.6. They're pricey but definitely worth it. Go with 3.73 gears in the back and look into spherical bushings for the 8.8 as well as adjustable control arms to correct the pinion angle after.

Is there a big difference in HP gain from using the trick flow as opposed to the PI heads?

Yeah, they outflow them significantly. The PI and NPI heads both suffer from poor intake flow numbers because the valve faces away from the port. It's well worth the cost plus they come equipped with the valves and springs necessary for running aftermarket cams and blowers and whatnot.

Hell yes thanks for the info! i hope I can find a pair for a decent price they seem badass! As for the gearing, why 3.73 instead of 4.10 gears? I used to work on helicopters but am still learning about cars.

I say 3.73's just due to doing highway miles, 4.10's will set you in the 3200 rpm range in 5th gear so highway won't be fun to drive long distances but 3.73's give you great acceleration without much sacrifice. Feel free to ask anything about these engines, I've been researching them for a while and testing different combinations of parts in a wave analysis system. They're great engines with a lot of stupid decisions on Ford's part. With very small modifications they can get up there in the range up LS builds. Too many people are unwilling or unable to do the work necessary though. It's expensive but it's a fun, long lasting engine if done right. Another thing I'd recommend is long tube headers from ebay I got a set for $100 and thought it would be so-so quality come to find out they're tig welded actual stainless steel. It helps with preventing reversal of air and interference between exhaust ports with a cam with heavy overlap.

Thanks for the info! Im gonna look up the headers here in an while. the car runs pretty well and no check engine light so thats a plus. Unless its burnt out..What about changing the Cam out?

If you're looking for a good compromise cam a stage 3 from comp cams will put you into the 350 range easily without too much of a problem with drivablity. But you'd be wise to change the sprockets to adjustables and do a good degreeing job. The other thing with the 4.6 that should be adressed is the manifold, get a Professional Products aluminum 3 piece intake, they have mixed reviews but mine is doing the trick very nicely and I've never had any issues.
