StangNet's 1986 GT Project

The cars trim and exterior has been completed.


From Late Model Restoration we used:

Ford Logos
Front Turn Signals
Front Side Markers
Rear Deck 'Mustang GT' Decal
Door Lock Set / Black
Cowl Cover
5.0 Side Emblems


All metal trim
Rear tail lights
Some moldings

All metal moldings were removed and painted. The trim on the car had been painted several times. To get it looking as new as possible we removed all the metal trim from the door window frame. There are many pieces there tied together. Removing them is delicate and hairy, but the finished look is worth it if you have the time. The mirrors probably had 5 coats of paint on them. This is another part we could not source new so we took our time sanding them down and painting.

For the early FOX GT's that run the GT Embossed side molding, there are no buy 'new' replacements. I imagine this is due to copyright issues with the Ford 'GT' logo. Our's were in pretty rough shape but decided to tackle them and see how 'new' we could make them. Quite pleased with the final look.


The ones on this car had been painted with Black trim paint covering the entire molding. Not sure what approach to take to save the GT part, I just went to town with a grey scrub pad. It worked!


Basically, the light grey look of the GT part is embedded deep in the rubber, so take liberty in just scrubbing it clean without fear of removing any color. I used water and a grey scrub pad to clean it up.

I then used some liquid masking material to cover the GT area before paint. After applying the SEM Grey paint, I then removed the mask and all is well.

The body prep and simple body imperfections were taken care of the body has been painted. We have done the initial polish and will touch it up again once we are complete.

When I started this project, I wanted to keep it completely original, including all colors. I worked for a few months collecting all the needed items in Canyon Red, the interior color of this 1986, however not very many of the new restoration parts and materials were close the original color. It's not that they do not try, it's just a hard color to match. Sourcing materials needed to color match a 28 year old car, not easy, and not red.

I decided to drop that plan and go with the interior year color correct 'Grey'. I sourced all the correct parts I could and then color matched the grey with some 'One Hit Wonder' paint.

I use this paint with our Hyrodgraphics that we do and it is designed to stick to anything, period. Old plastic, sure! We had them make us up a single stage batch, even with some shine reducer, to give us the sheen we were after. Turned out great and I really can't even scratch this stuff off, forget the PPG dye paints!

The Mustang was in bad need of a total refresh... body time!

We stripped the interior and all the exterior attachments.


Gave her freshly painted door jams


Rebuilt the rusted rear deck from 2 and made one.


We also removed the lead at the A &B pillars and filled with All-Metal
(for those that do not know, new modern plastic paints do not breathe, and the lead will stiff off gas. Visit a car show and check the A & B pillars on Fox bodies and check for all the pop bubbles, you will be surprised.)



Nice body prep, 2 coats of base Oxford White and 3 coats of clear and sanded and buffed.





Next for the body is moldings, graphics and windows and trim.
