No they are not the same....the 2.3 mustang is called the Lima engine since it was built in lima ohio. it was used in the 2.3L pintos and now has made its way into the fox body stangs as well as the rangers in that era. the 2.5L that is in the rangers also show some similiarities to the 2.3...

if you really want to find out (however, like everyone else said, too new for 289), pull the rocker covers. There should be a 289 or 302 stamped in the iron. There is the same thing on the lifter valley if you pull the intake.

Its going to be a pain in the ass, but it should be a fun project... i didnt think about injecting before the blower, but thats basicially what the carbs do...good point. i have a lot of friends in fab shops that are willing to help out so this should be a fun learning experiance.
