'65 Mustang - Stereo Install Ideas

I installed a stereo under the dash in my 66. I think it looks pretty good. Restoration and Modification of a 1966 Mustang Restomod: stereo

    Fuel gauge/sender

Sounds like good news! If you encounter the gauge back on "E" when the tank has fuel in it, the new float (brass or not) might have filled with fuel due to a manufacturing defect (i.e., small pinhole). I replaced two new repro brass floats for this problem. But there's a Ford float...

    Trunk questions

I couldn't push the forward edge of carpet down far enough for a good fit with the steel sheet behind the seats. If I used a different kit (for a larger fuel tank like I had) that might have helped, but not sure at this point. I needed a hard-to-find blue carpet anyway so went custom. I...

    Trunk questions

Interesting, I had no idea.. In my case I needed a Ford Blue carpet, and the few places that supposedly had them, sent Medium Blue (which is a shade or two off). So I did it myself with a sheet of Ford Blue from ACC.

    Trunk questions

I went with a custom carpet solution rather than a kit. A kit wouldn't fit mine since I had a larger fuel tank and steel trunk divider. The custom deal was less than a $250 kit.

    Trunk questions

If you don't need an original look I'd use some carpet, after you clean up and reseal the metal. It makes the trunk much nicer and gives more usable space. Here's a link to some info about my trunk project if it helps: Restoration and Modification of a 1966 Mustang Restomod: trunk

    Harmonic balancer for 331 stroker?

Just an update: Thanks for the suggestions on all the options. After looking over a Romac 0209, I went with the Professional Products 80006. I bought it from Amazon a few weeks ago for only $76 shipped. (The price is over $100 now though.) Overall, for the money, I definitely can't beat it!

    Interior kits / parts questions

Glass out or in Hmm i suppose you can paint it if you prefer, but you can still install a headliner with the glass in, it's just not as easy (since you are pushing the glued headliner edge under the windshields' rubber trim.) Also, if you remove the old headliner, you'll be able to glue some...

1966 Coupe - Looking for Radio Advice

I went with non-standard speakers in hidden locations, left the stock radio in the dash, but installed a new more functional radio under the dash. I think it looks pretty good, very stock appearing, and was inexpensive. I have some more info here, if this helps: stereo install in 66 coupe

    Interior kits / parts questions

headliner The headliner install isn't that bad if you have the front and rear glass out... I'd recommend the $5 can of glue to wipe on the edges (not the spray glue). It's pretty straightforward, and an extra set of hands helps. Extra windlace can be used to hold the edges as you work...

    Harmonic balancer for 331 stroker?

Numbers + photos Thanks for your responses! Was out of town, I just had a chance to yank the starter (and the oil pan, was going to do that one anyway) and checked out the casting numbers for the year. I have C8OE 6015A, which I guess is a 1968 302 block. That Prof Products balancer looks...

    Harmonic balancer for 331 stroker?

Thanks, here's the one I'm looking at: Ford SFI balancer damper Powerbond 289 302 3-bolt I'm surprised the original one is just over 6# and this new one is nearly 11#, but I guess that is a good thing. With this slightly larger one, I think I'll need spacers behind the water pump and...

    Harmonic balancer for 331 stroker?

I'm resealing much of my 331 stroker to fix some leaks and now that the front timing cover, pulleys, and balancer are off I'm wondering if I should buy a better balancer. I'd like to get a SFI rated one, but not sure what specs to get... The engine is a 302 as printed in the lifter valley...

    Spray dying seat color change

I bought upholstery for $150 brand-new, and in a custom blue color, on eBay. (I already had hog ring pliers, which I needed to install.) Fit fine and looks great. But that's more money than about $20 in paint.

    Prothane Motor Mounts

I went with the TCP mounts, and they are great (and stock style trans mount for T5). Good thinking to install upgraded mounts with a 347. The TCP and RMP mounts won't pull apart like the stock style. I think the Prothane are also stock-style, but with urethane instead of rubber. If you are...

How much sound deadening (dynamat etc) is needed?

The doors... I did inside the doors, but my doors were new repops so they didn't have any factory sound deadener in there already. If you have new doors or the old sound deadener can be removed from the original doors, it's worthwhile to mat them right on the metal. Here's a pic of the...

My last electrical gremlin? One brake light...

Fixed, Thanks This is one of a few posts that have been solved since I first posted in '08. Rusty67 gets the prize for this one. :-) It was a bad bulb. The second bad LED in a row on that side apparently. So I used a standard 1157 and everything worked again... Thanks all!

    instrument lighting upgrade

Sounds good! Got a pic? Here's my ebay LEDs without diffusers, funny that the fuel gauge is tough to read too. :) But I think the light itself looks pretty good, matches the blue lights on the Pioneer stereo now. Also put a blue LED in the tach on the steering column to match...

    door hardware installation

The replacement handles on my 66 fit fine. In fact, the door is a repop too, no issues. I did save my old pitted Ford handles in case I wanted to reuse them one day.
