    power door locks

If the passenger side locks and the driver's side doesn't, it's the door lock solenoid. I've replaced either 3 or 4 of these (I've lost count), one of them on my Taurus SHO (RIP). To replace the door lock solenoid you've got to remove the door panel and drill out the rivet that holds the...

    Rear Brake Job

The real problem with doing the rears on pretty much any Ford with disc brakes is that the parking brake is a LOUSY design. It uses a "Y" type brake cable which requires you to get the adjustment exactly correct so that the rear pistons can adjust themselves properly when you pull the parking...

    Leaking Convertible

My top was doing the same thing, to the point where I had a small swimming pool in the rear well. The drain wasn't plugged, it was the window itself. The vinyl where it attaches to the rear of the car had dry rotted and split, causing it to leak. New window eliminated the problem entirely...

Help With Rack & Pinion Bushings

I just replaced my entire rack in the drive way, along with the outer tie rod ends. It took me about six hours, but a certain un-named parts store sold me a bad outer which I had to return, then go to another store because they didn't have a replacement. To your question - it is certainly...

Can a catless midpipe pass emissions on these cars?

I have the same set up on my '98, but it smells terrible because the six cats they put on from the factory are in my tool shed. Don't they notice that and inspect the car? I'm sure hoping so, because I'm due to have it inspected next year.

    Cobra R rotors warped

I have the Cobra brake upgrade on my '98 GT, brand new parts with PBR two piston calipers and 13" rotors. I know it's not the exact same set up, but rotors of that size, especially driven exclusively on the street, shouldn't warp, and I'm having a problem with minor warpage with not 5,000 miles...

body lines and gaps. not 100% perfect

The driver's side door on my '98 is misaligned - you can see it at the back edge more than the front. I thought it was the standard hinge pin wear, but my body man told me the pin is OK. He said that sometimes they just don't get aligned right. He said the doors are placed by a machine...

Missing and Lagging. Cleaning the COP's?

I've had a couple of bourbons, so maybe I missed it, but I didn't see where you replaced the spark plug wires. They can cause a similar kind of problem, and they're relatively inexpensive to replace. To me, when I've had problems with spark plug wires, it always seems to mimic fuel problems -...

    Gasoline smell in car

I had this issue right after I replaced the fuel pump in my '91 - BUT - it had nothing to do with the grommet or the fuel pump. Coincidentally enough, the fuel lines run under the driver's side (think that's right) and one of them had rusted through and started leaking. Check that also.

    U/D pulleys, alternator pulley

+1 to that. I bought my MAC UDP's used from a guy who didn't even have the alternator pulley. He told me that the dyno tests he had seen indicated that at most an alternator takes maybe 2 HP, maybe even less. I was able to use the stock serpentine belt without it. It's really smart...

    Baer 13" rear brake upgrade

I'm not the world's greatest mechanic, but I do know that on typical rear brakes, the pistons have to be adjusted properly. They're not floating like they are in the front. You have to screw them in or out to get the proper braking force. Then the action of the parking brake cable adjusts...

Need quick help on Cobra wheels on '98

I'm just a dumbass. The wheel slips over a 1/4" lip on the hub, and there was just enough rust on the hub that it wouldn't easily slide on. I finally figured that out after buying spacers at two stores and calling my mechanic. God, they do look sweet on the car. It looks better, rides...

Need quick help on Cobra wheels on '98

Just bought a set of I believe '2003 Cobra wheels for my '98 GT. Got ready to mount them, and it appears that the front wheel dust cap hits the SVT center cap on the wheel. Anybody encounter this, and know an effective fix for it? I thought of spacers, but hated to have something else on the...

Making the switch from conventional to synthetic oil

I used to run synthetic oil in my '89 SHO with no leaking problems. I would point out that the motor in these cars is the same motor as they put in the 300,000 mile Crown Vic taxis. You could piss in them and they're going to last.

    94 Mustang GT Convertible ?'s

I've got a '98 'vert, and it's been pretty good in the winter. I believe they have the same top, lining and gaskets, so yours should be pretty good as well. Pull the rear seat bottom and look to see if there's any rust on the floor. That will tell you if the top is leaking. Also, look in the...

Which parts needed to switch to V8 brakes?

I have a '91 LX that needs front rotors. I also have the spindles for a 5.0. I'm thinking of putting on those spindles so I can upgrade to V8 brakes. My mechanic tells me that the struts won't fit. Anybody done this? Can you tell me if that's true, or what parts would I need? I know I...

    94 or keep & improve my 98?

I currently have a '98 GT vert bone stock except for 3.73 gears, in excellent shape ~ 71k miles. I can get a '94 GT vert that appears to be in excellent, similar shape for ~ $6,500. The (main) question is - do I keep the '98 and improve it (maybe PI intake and cams) or sell it and get the...

Cobra brakes on a GT. I have a problem-HELP Please.

I've never done rear discs, but I suspect you could use the tip of a pair of needle nose pliers spread out as the tool if you were in a pinch and the piston wasn't bound too badly. One other thing to note is that they get adjusted out by regular use of the parking brake. It screws the...

Noob, and in trouble a4ld yippie

Unfortunately, the A4ld was used in a lot of Fords, and is a weak sister piece of crap. I got a rebuilt one for my '89 'vert from Roadmasters Transmission in Schaumburg, IL (they're 10 minutes from my house, and offer a two year warranty and the best price I found on an A4ld). They also offer...
