    Rebuilding the 289

I'm in a similar boat as you right now, rebuilding my 289. The difference is that I'm keeping mine as a 289 (plus the .30 over bore, so 292). - Machined the block - new Keith Black hypereutectic pistons - CompCams 282S solid cam/lifters - AFR165 heads - Weiand Stealth Intake - 600cfm...

    68 GT500KR Vert Restomod Project

wait ... so you have a 68 GT500KR Convertible that you've modified and/or are planning to modify further?? I am no sort of traditionalist or anything, but oh god ... I hurt inside thinking that you're doing such blasphemous things to such a wonderful car. It's my favorite mustang ever, and...

    Engine build specs

I'd go with the AFR165 heads if you can afford them. I have a similar build coming up, except it's a 289 instead of a 302. AFR165 heads Comp Cams 282s cam KB hypereutectic flat top pistons It'll be a real screamer, perfect for weekend cruises

    289 value?

depending on the engine that you were planning to purchase, a built 289 could possibly be on even playing ground, and a tad less common than a crate engine. With a nice solid cam, it'd sound pretty wicked too.

    289 Rebuild Suggestions

If you can, get them suckers milled down another ~2cc and you'll be golden. I'm guessing they aren't the original pistons, considering you had a CR of ~8.7:1 with E6's. They probably have 64cc chambers, so 58cc chambers would be fantastic.

    289 Rebuild Suggestions

Those heads might not be a good idea. The compression on 289's is usually bad enough, depending on the pistons used. Even bran new flat top pistons will bring the CR up to ~9.5:1 with 58cc heads. I'm not sure what the combustion chamber size of 351 heads are, but I can't imagine they are the...

    Machining or Grinding Cam Journals???

i can imagine that without EXTREME care and precision, grinding up cam journals can have very expensive consequences. It'll likely be much less risky to replace the cam bearings or get a new cam altogether. You might want to call Ford Racing to see what cam bearings they recommend using with...

    1965 mustang engine rebuild

take a trip over to the Comp Cams website. they have an online catalog that has cams for 289's, and descriptions of what each one is used for. There are a few that are based on original specs, so go check them out. Just swapping cams, you probably won't get anything significant out of the...

    Who runs AFR 165's?

I'd also like to know if you have any HP estimates for your motor. I'm currently rebuilding my 68's 289, and plan on sticking a set of the non-emissions AFR 165's, RPM Air-Gap, Comp Cams 282s cam, and an appropriately sized carb. Dyno2003 Engine Simulator says that combo will give me a...

New member introduction and a couple 289 questions

About the 289's compression ratio Yes, up until 67, the combustion chambers were 54cc. In 68, they changed to about 63cc, and the 289 pistons were slightly dished. These two factors brought the 68 289's CR down to something like 8.1:1. With the purchase of some new flat-top pistons and...

New member introduction and a couple 289 questions

you're not likely to need a new crank. They're beasts, and will take a hell of a lot of punishment. Same deal with your connecting rods. Get them reconditioned and shot-peened, and they'll be good to go. Those suckers can take a beating as well. You will have saved a good chunk of change...

    some ******* keyed the car

Think i'm gonna give this a try. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, then to the body shop it goes. I still can't believe some prick would just decide that he doesn't like me because of my car. Things like this make me lose my faith in humanity

    some ******* keyed the car

i want to figure out a way to buff it out without having to get the whole door & left quarter repainted it's a good 6-7 inches long, and i can feel it a slight bit with my fingernail. is there anything i can do that might make it look ok?

    289 Stroker Kit

**The only reasons to definately use a late model 5.0L block over a 289 are these: 1) The late model 5.0L blocks are roller blocks. Roller hardware is a nice luxury. 2) You may not want to keep the 289 block incase you feel like building it back more towards original specs.

Does hot tanking clear cooling passages?

I'm pretty sure that hot tanking will in fact clear out the cooling passages. If it doesn't, then a good thorough steam cleaning should do the job. Best way to find out is to ask the guy that'll be doing the job. good choice on pumping up the 289.

    289 Stroker Kit

My build includes the following: Hot tank & bore the block .030 over KB281 Hypereutectic pistons (a bit lighter than the KB115's) Recondition & shot-peen the original piston rods Clean up the original crank. It was in excellent condition, no cuts necessary Comp Cams 282s cam Weiand...

General consensus- 19" or 20" on the GT?

just go with some 14" deep dish wheels and get the meatiest tires possible

    289 Stroker Kit

I would not suggest a 347 stroker on an original 289 block. If you want the 347, grab a 5.0 roller block. they're rather inexpensive, and much more friendly with a stroker If you want to keep the 289 block, either build the hell out of the 289 or grab a 302 rotating assembly and have at it...
