Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Wow, just went out and cracked the choke open then took it for a drive...turns out that was the problem! Turns out I was closing the choke when it warmed up  instead of opening it. Dear LORD does it pull in the midrange now. Gonna recheck the timing again when it gets darker just to make...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

OK, got most everything hooked back up, checked for vac leaks with carb spray, no noticeable drops in rpms. Brakes feel a bit mushy, even with the vac lines connected, could that be a sign of a vac leak? I haven't gotten my hands on a vaccuum gauge yet. Timing is set to 12* BTDC Car runs great...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

AHAHAHA IT RUNS!!!! Roughly, but it's Running! Took it for a quick ride, and even untuned, MY GOD it wants to pull! This intake feels like I did a headswap, it feels completely different! It's a manual choke, so I have to set it by hand for now... but who cares! It's idling around 2000...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

After thinking about it, I think I know what happend to the screws on the butterfly. The first time I went to fire the car over after installing the intake manifold, I got a BIG backfire. That's when I believe the screws sheared off. OK, got the new carb bolted on and I used a flexible...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

I've read so many different things about this. Someone said it should be at 12 oclock pointing at the firewall, someone said pointing at #1 cylinder, and so on. Is there any concrete article with pictures that will show this? I have concrete pics someone took of their car with it pointing...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Got back around 5am with the carb, took a nap, and just now getting around to looking at everything. Turns out the carb is a Holley 1850 with manual choke (which I'm assuming I have to set by hand on cold mornings) Now, the stock idle solenoid doesn't look like it's going to fit well with this...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Oh s---, I just thought of something else. If any part of that little screw fell into the motor, what are the chance it's in my the engine and going to cause it to go BOOM? I have a bad feeling I just doomed my motor :( The screw heads are no where to be found, and i can't see anything inside of...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

All day the throttle linkage was getting stuck a little, and causing the spring between itself and the idle screw to dislodge. As per my pervious post, it's way off and won't move, really stuck. So I removed the carb. Hey that doesn't look right......... Anyone in the Plymouth/Carver South...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Also, I just noticed that my throttle linkage is getting STUCK! Not just the cable, the part that is attatched to the carb and springs back when you let off the gas. GAHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Should I removed the carb or is there a quick way to fix this?

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

I went back outside, and used my new tool (1/4'' socket with two 6'' extensions TAPED together) and rotated the oil pump driveshaft. I then installed the dizzy with the rotor point as close to the rear of the car as I could get after about 20 tries. Also replaced the carb gasket and...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Also, could that little stone fuel filter being in backwards in the carb cause any of this?? I wasn't sure which way to put it in, so I just guessed :(

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Hmm, I reused the old gaket as it wasn't torn or anything. What do you mean by the float being stuck? How do I check that? This is my first car that I've worked on with a caburetor (if you couldn't already tell) Should I go and pick up a new carb gasket?

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Yeah I took the pic before I had everything hooked up, it's on now. What do you mean recheck the bolts to make sure no water got in? I checked the bolts again last night, and they are all tight, Any quick way to check for water?

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

No, haven't touched any of that. Took the driver's side valve cover off to replace the gasket, but didn't touch anything under it and it's all buttoned back up.

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Hooked the plug wires up correctly, connected everything, gave the throttle a few pumps to get some gas in the carb, put the key ON and the shifter in neutral, and jumped the start solenoid contacts. Car cranked, backfired, and lit on fire. Put the fire in the carb out, cranked again, and just...

Major Problems after intake swap on carb'd 5.0

Can I do that by jumping the starter solenoid with the ebrake on and the car in neutral without damaging anything?
