My son and I just got a 2002 base model Mustang project. It has a crank bearing failure and we had planned to rebuild it, but it looks like the cause may be oil starvation due to the fact that there is no oil in the pan and no coolant in the car either (a running $300 car I didnt expect much). So we are also looking into a used motor from another car to rebuild as a worst case plan. Will the PATS system will need the vin of the other motor to start/run properly? And if it does can I use forscan to program it?

I will continue to do my own homework on the issue but if someone has information on this I would appreciate your feedback. Thank You

The THREE things that affect PATS are:
  • Cluster
  • PCM
  • chipped key
FWIIW there isn't anyway to tie a VIN to a long block. Feel free to swap long blocks without doing any PCM reprogramming. As long as the replacement long block is electrically the same as the original the PCM will not know the difference.
