2.3 intake muffler

What is the purpose of the intake muffler, and can you run a cold air intake.

I have cut through my old one, It was a resonator like piece and think it was also used as an insulator from the heat of under the hood. It is hollow between the middle and the outside. Other than that I have no idea.

it was meant to reduce the sound the intake air makes so the passengers would not hear a sucking sound under heavy Acceleration Personally i like the sound, you can remove it.
