Spent yesterday unhooking and lifting motor up to get to pan.
I got the pan off but couldn't get it out. Its below the pully.
What ever, I just need room to do seal.

DSCF0199.JPG

Heres rear main cap and chevy orange guy glued seal in with some kind of seal dressing.

Was very worried about scratching the crank sealing surface with the awkward position.
Even with the brass drift. I couldn't make it work. So out it comes.

DSCF0201.JPG

Pulled exhaust on one side and leaned it on a block of wood so I could get a good hit on the punch.
Here it is the real meaning of driveway build.
Noticed we had the inspection plate on wrong too.

I ground the end of the punch to a shape similar to shape of seal and hit it hard.
I was so happy when the upper half of seal finally moved a little.
I sprayed some carb cleaner and oiled the new seal and was ready to slide it home, YES!
Now which way does that pesky lip go!?!

Here's both on bench
I think the other shot is old seal still in place.
Bearing looks ok?

I had the engine ready to go back in but sun was going down. Can't do it myself, driveway is inclined, so I started cleaning up.
Just then my kid got dropped off from his extracurricular activities.
He got his friends to help and those teens had that block back in and on the mounts in minutes flat.
Just before the sun went down. I think they really enjoyed that moment of glory. We'll frost the cake tomorrow.

Out and N in one day, heck yeah!

I got me some JB weld exhaust pipe toothpaste and some fender washers.
If the goo don't fix the leak I'll have to cut and re weld the mounting flange.
Washers are for trying to move the seat back a bit, hey I'm a big guy.

This is what I picked for ignition.

s-l64.jpg

After determining the GM style HEI won't fit with the stock air cleaner. I got an small cap HEI, in blue.
130$ plus 15$ shipping so it was the right price for sure.

I handed the box to my son and his friends and talked them thru it but they put it in together.
Should of took a picture but it happened pretty quickly. I made them all hold the timing light and look at the timing marks.
A couple of turns of the screwdriver on the carb and it is dialed.

This solved all the tuning problems. If fires instantly and idles so smoothly that I don't think it has a cam anymore.
Instant low RPM throttle response is nice. Just got to tidy up some wires. I want to drive it.

I'm gonna guess that it sounds a bit nicer than what you pulled out since the old one wasn't really in too good of shape.... :)
But it's only Friday night, you have the rest of the weekend to get her up to snuff and maybe take her for a spin! Congrats on getting her fired up though!!

Pedal felt soft. Looked in master cylinder and rear reservoir is empty. So i put a splash of dot 3 in and tried the pedal but it just leaked out the rusty rear brake line. Yup more 45 yr old wore out crap. Not driving it today.

I have that sinking feeling, Like the engine this brake system is gonna need an everything i bet.

Now I'm cam curious. So out with the dial indicator and take a number.

Intake = .256 push rod lift
Exhaust= .264 push rod lift
As best as I can tell.

Math
.256 X 1.6 rocker arm ratio = .409
.264 X 1.6 = .422

So Looking for cams with .409 / .422 vavle lift

Comparisons;
1974 stock 302 - .369 - .381 valve lifts idle to 4000 rpm 141 hp @ 3200rpm

Comp cam 240H .416 - .416 valve lifts 800 - 4500 rpm Closest I could find for these 2 numbers.

E-303 (roller) 5.0 - .498 - .498 valve lifts 1200 - 4500 rpm

I don't think Comp cams offers a smaller cam than 240H

Results; Yawn,
well at least it runs and will idle in traffic.

Got up at crack of dawn to try and catch the moment when the high winds this last 2 weeks are calmest.

DSCF0239.JPG DSCF0240.JPG

Looking like it flowed out nice for back yard style. Lots of birds today eating the fruits that fell from neighbors tree. Hoping they don't land on it.
My son and I welded up that kids tandem bike a few years ago for a school bike rodeo.
I learned they don't sell many kids tandems for a reason. LOL they still had fun trying.

Window trim clips.
Got me some stainless speciality screws for the trim pins that are missing (5). Drilled tiny holes before the POR15 dump back at the start.
Painted my new clips red

The new clips r so tight that some scratched the paint going in. Gonna touch it up before trim goes in.

Intake leaks some oil out front where I was too stingy with the silicone.

But first the tinfoil test. Looks like it squished to 3/4 on an inch from hood.
fullsizeoutput_18e7.jpeg

Pulled stocker '66 2V off and pulled Edelbrock RPM down off shelf, Yes its that dusty.
DSCF0229.JPG DSCF0231.JPG

Side by side not looking like it well make it.

DSCF0232.JPG

Mock it up anyway with 2 to 4 barrel adapter plate and no 2 barrel spacer. No gaskets either (hey thats an 1/8 inch). Tinfoil is flat before hood shuts.
Sorry sideways.:eek::confused:

Time to clean up the window trims. Pretty darn rough looking.

Yeah, that RPM intake is a little taller than the 2bbl intake, definitely need to watch the hood clearance - or just cut a hole in the hood like I did! :D
