351W swap headers necessary?

The '79 Mustang project I recently bought has had a 351W / C4 already swapped into it, but it still retains the log style exhaust manifolds that are then followed by a home made X pipe w/o mufflers. I'm getting ready to pull the engine for a performance oriented rebuild, and definately want to go back with long tube headers. My question is: Is the purpose of the swap headers to align the collectors with the factory exhaust location, or does the width difference of the engine mean that a bigger dia. 302 header will not physically fit into the car when bolted to a 351W? I ask because there is a pretty major cost jump for the swap headers, and I'm going to have my exhaust made custom anyway. Thanks
