65 Still in lap, oil pump driveshaft issue

Will keep short. 1965 Mustang no oil pressure. During rebuild, builder put screen to pump gasket on and center part of gasket was still on or part if gasket. This blocked 100% of the oil flow to engine.

I put rods, mains, rear seal and new pump and shaft. Did not install from bottom oil shaft w keeper correctly. Sounds oil pump from top and oil pump that was pulled up and out of oil pump drive but fortunately stayed on top.

Was able to put 1" piece of surgical tubing 1/2" onto old pump shaft and from the top inserted the other 1/2" of the tubing down into engine and attach it to the internal pump shaft in place.

Was then able to fish it around until I felt it go back into oil pump drive. Then I used a thin screwdriver to push down on top of the short hose as I pulled the old shaft from the motor.

As normal inserted the distributor and bumped engine as bottom of distr pushed hose down further over installed shaft as distr fell into place.

The rotor was installed trying to hit the number 1 tower but missed it and will rotate wires to appropriate tower and label.

It is noted that the next time or person who removed the distributor will more than likely pull the shaft out of the pump. I will do everything I can to ensure future owners are aware of this.

In retrospect I wish someone would have told me to ensure washer attached to the distributor shaft should be installed with washer going up into the motor to prevent the oil pump shaft from being pulled up when the distributor us removed.

That soooooooooo sucks! Glad you were able to fix it from the top, so to speak. That's an EASY thing to have happen and ruin your whole day.

This happens to me...shaft falls into oipan, I'm freaking out, starting to remove oil pan. My engine shop...no biggie, just get new shaft and carefully insert from top. Old shaft in op is not a problem.

Yup. Have seen this same thing removing an oilpan from a 289 several years ago. Once the drive shaft is in the pah, it just lays there and can't cause any issues (but it is a bit disconcerting to know it's there...LOL).

Getting there ..
