I'm intrigued by this. Lots of potential.

I'm curious to see what the aftermarket comes up with in terms of support for things like k-members, headers, swap kits, etc. It's a much tighter package than the coyote, and a nice, low-profile intake would make it more appealing towards swaps. New cam profiles wouldn't hurt either.

Of course, it will be years before 7.3's are readily available in a junkyard for cheap. But I think I'm more interested in this engine as a swap motor, vs a coyote.

Has anyone revealed the weights of the 7.3L vs a coyote or 5.0?

Thanks, I couldn't see the link in your original post.

I would like to see Ford put the 7.3 out as a crate engine, and maybe a control pack. You probably also run it with a MS or Holley system.

I can see the link, is it not there? Try this one

Evan Smith has several videos about the 7.3 on youtube. He and Brian Wolfe (former ford engineer and drag racer) tear a 7.3 down and show off all its internal details. Wolfe was involved in the development of the 7.3 before he retired.

Has anybody seen the official weight numbers on this engine? I have confidence this engine is going to be a very capable platform for drag duty but might be a little heavy for road race purposes. Now if they would come out with an aluminum block version in the future

I like the engine, like the optimism surrounding it, but I just can't see it being more than niche.
It's certainly not the next LS.
The LS is what it is because they are a dime a dozen.
How many f250 and 350 owners are going to go for a gas engine?
How many will get wrecked and totaled?
For sure junkyard engines will command a premium, likely more than they are worth.
As for crate engines or long blocks, ford has long charged way too much for most.
Then stroking, head work, cam, headers and an intake along with a standalone system will push this thing to the level of the wealthy or insane.
It's like that aluminator in that 93 cobra, awesome engine? For sure, but 20 grand?

We will probably see many of these being swapped into cars on TV shows, but I doubt many will show up in foxes or regular people that aren't building $150,000 cars.

It'll probably be 8+ years before we can see where this engine will go as far as availability and affordability. I agree this won't be the next LS as that engine was in everything and is the primary reason it's so cheap to buy. I wouldn't be surprised though if 8 years down the road there aren't more of these available in a junkyard then what you think. The 7.3 really seems to be aimed at fleet vehicles and the guy that want's a diesel but doesn't want to deal with the added cost and maintenance. That's a large portion of 3/4 and 1 ton owners. I've had Ford diesel trucks since 1997 and I'm seriously considering the 7.3 for my next truck (anybody else see the TFL truck Ike Gauntlet test?) . I love the 6.7 in my current truck but the 10K premium and added maintenance is getting hard to swallow on an already 60K+ truck. And if they decide to offer it in other platforms (such as the f150) that only adds more volume.

I remember when the LS first starting coming in the pickups back in 99. People bitched because the new engine was different then the tried and true 350 and was going to be ultra expensive to modify. I remember my uncle in his 99 GMC short bed calling it a "race engine" compared to the old 350. Look how far that platform has matured in 21+ years.

I think a lot of the hype right now is because us Ford guys have been really hungry for an updated, affordable pushrod design to compete with the LS and this is the only game. I love the coyote but you really do have to have deep pockets to play with that motor. I guess only time will tell on this one...

I like it too and I have my days where I want something new, like a 9000rpm coyote, then I start crunching numbers...
The reality is that i'll spend more and most likely land up with less.

I'm still saving up for the Coyote.

id Like to see what a 7.3l, with an aftermarket cam, aftermarket intake, exhaust, and performance tune can do.

Just the thought of 500+ hp with a cam/intake swap has me drooling.

Would be nice if it was an easier drop in vs the coyote, but we will see how that goes.

But yeah, it won’t be the next junkyard LS motor, but you still need to throw money at a 302 to make power and still stuck with the prospect of splitting your block at 500.

I just like options. Will one fit in a FF cobra? :)
