Build Thread '83 T-top Coupe - Welding Holes in My Rear

I've been looking into Magnum Powers a bit. They're supercharger specialist.

Steve @a91what had mentioned their MPx sc case earlier in this thread.

In the middle of January I should have quite a bit of money (for me at least) opening up for me to buy some nice things. Since this will be perfectly in the dead middle of the sc engine rebuild I'm thinking of buying quite a bit of stuff.

The heads will cost $1400 ish, but the sc will probably be the big amount. I'm seeing $2500-$3000 for the purchases on it. Not to mention the $3000 or so for the transmission. The positive light to this is that after I've done the drivetrain over the winter, everything else will be relatively cheap.

What I've got right now are just a couple information questions.

For you that know, what do you think of Magnum Powers? They really are the only game in town for sc replacement parts for my engine.

Since the TKO500 and TKO600 are very similar in price, beyond torque capabilities, is there a benefit to getting the 600 over the 500?

IIRC the 600 has a taller first gear and somewhat taller ratios in all the other gears too. The 500 has ratios almost identical to the '89+ T5s.

So, strength and gear ratio, that's the only difference. My hunch is that they both use the same steel gear alloy and the additional strength of the 600 just comes from the different cut of the gear teeth, necessitating the ratio change. Also you can't get the 10-spline input in the 600.

You can find a lot of tech documents on the TKOs on Tremec's website and around the internet on some of the big aftermarket transmission supplier websites.

If you haven't already heard about it, consider your upgrade options for shifting these things. I have carbon fiber lined synchros and a modified shift lug that's supposed to make them shift smoothly at high RPM.

My TKO600 that I bought from American Powertrain supposedly has that shift upgrade for high rpm shifts but I tried to shift around 6700ish rpms and it said :nono:. So I'm starting to think they charged me for it but didn't actually do it.

It's a totally different kind of synchro. Basically all the synchro teeth are removed from the gear and slider, and a plate with a few big teeth are added in their place. Shifts faster at full throttle (basically a larger engagement window) but is more tricky street driving.

I picked up Scuby at lunch and brought him to the shop.

Some of my buddies helped with all of the loading and unloading.

Parked next to his new buddy. It's amazing how small a fox is next to a newer charger.

Tomorrow his glass will get pulled and Thursday he gets tossed on to the frame machine.

I believe the hit that nailed the gas tank is responsible for the slight buckling in the right quarter. The rear floor pan on the right side is buckled just slightly as well.

So Dave...

I now have a mission for you. :O_o:

When you get the chance, look through the resources (look at one of Mike Raburn's) go through all of the tabs and see what's in them. Look at how the resource is laid out and especially the TABS (maybe I mentioned those already :O_o: ).

Once you're done. Get back with me and tell me what you think.

So, today was glass day.

I didn't really appreciate exactly how difficult 34 year old butyl could be till today, omg......:nonono:

It wasn't so dried up to simply fall apart. It was almost as hard as a rock, yet still pliable enough to not freaking let go! Damnit!

All that said, I got the freaking glass out and holy crap, i'm tired!

The windshield is wasted, which is ok. Oddly, new fox windshields are very affordable. A new windshield will be extra nice anyhow.

I got the quarter and rear glass out safely and even had time to clean up the quarter glass. They look almost as good as new. PLUS! The rear glass looks wonderful. The defroster lines are in great shape.

Tomorrow is frame day! Yay!

I look at that car and shudder......if I had that much work still in front of me I'd jump in front of a bus.

Good job getting the glass out in one piece Dave,...id have busted it all to hell.
I’m not in a rush anymore so it’s kind of fun to me.

The car is known to me now, I don’t think it has too many more hidden problems. I can do this.
Why are you doing two of the same threads in the same forum Dave..it's taking you twice as long to post info for the sake of saving somebody time to read through it...

Let them eat cake.
If for nothing else, it makes it easier for me to review what I’ve done.

It’s also easier for people to catch up on what I’ve done if they haven’t looked in for awhile.

So today.....it was a bad and good day.

Good? I got the supercharger off of the supercoupe.

Working on the car is therapeutic for me, I forget everything else.

The yard owner has a mechanics shop he leases out to a couple mechanics, they said they would finish pulling the engine for me for $175! I'm definitely all over that! So, maybe I can really have the sc engine in my garage soon.

Bad? I talked to my brother at lunch. The oncologist told him he needs to get things settled, he doesn't have real long.

Next week he will have to get a feeding tube because his esophagus will be pretty well closed due to the cancer.

He starts chemo and radiation therapy the week after, if it fails, he'll be dead in about two months.

He decided to forget about building the red car, he wants to spend the time with his boys. He was fishing with his older son today. I can't blame him, I would do the same.

I'm sad......
