Some have successfully run 275/40/17 on 17x8 wheels. A little bulge and Flex, so not ideal on a corner carver, but it's been done.

Good excuse to upgrade to a 9 / 10.5 staggered setup which looks killer. 
I agree I don't think you'd be happy with an overwidth tire on a stock rim, cornering will suffer as will how much the steering will like to float just cruising down the highway.

LMR sells the 93 R style wheel but think it might be 8" wide only.
