Alt. Upgrade quick q's

I'm planning on doing the upgrade this weekend and have a few q's. Is a fuse-link just a wire with a fuse in it?? If so, what size of fuse do I need?

How necessary is this wire?? Because on some sites it doesn't mention a fuse-link at all. What exactly is it's purpose?
