Everything I've read about this engine states it's developed from the Ford Duratech block with the intake and heads being Mazda designed pieces. To the best of my knowledge there is no relationship between the old Mazda V6s (like the ones that powered the Probe GT, Millenium, and 929) and the current Ford Duratech family.
You are correct, that is the Mazda 3.0 V6 is based off of the Ford Duratec. It uses modified heads and variable cam timing to get 220 HP.
The Duratec block really gets around. Here are its variants:
1. Original Duratec 3.0 V6 as used in Taurus / Sable.
2. 2.5L Duratec V6 used in last Cougar, Contour & Mystique.
3. 3.0 AJ V6 Jaguar engine, special heads and VVT give it 235 HP
4. Lincoln LS 3.0L V6, higher compression & VVT give it 232 HP
5. Aston Martin 6.0L V12, is essentially 2 Duratec 3.0 V6's stacked end to end rated 444 HP.
6. As mentioned above, 3.0L Mazda 6 V6, 220 HP.
