my brake lights only turn on when i am braking hard and only for about half a second which always has me worried. i took a look under the dash and was able to find the switch and it looks like there is a coil connected to the brakes that activates the switch. i played around with it for a little while and it looks like it should be adjustable but i have no idea how. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

The brake light switch has a built in spring. Just replace the switch with the proper one. Sounds like someone put one in for manual brakes rather than power or visa-versa.

What has happened is that the brake light switch is bad. It needs to be replaced. This is what they do when they fail. 5.0resto or ford. The brake light switches are mostly the same from ford product to ford product should be able to get one out of just about anything. If the wires dont line up, just fix them. Only 2 wires. Simplest setup possible.
