i know how to remove the airbag and the steering wheel but I’m having trouble with the column. There’s a plastic plate with instructions on it and a tab with 2 wires sticking out (I’m assuming hats for airbag and cruise control). How do I remove that plastic part or the tab so I can get my hub adapter to slide over the center shaft?

Just a suggestion. You might get more/better help if you posted pictures so that others can see what you are seeing. Best not to ask the people out in Internet land to guess.

If asking for an educated guess, the part in question is the "sliding contact, Air bag".

>>from Ford manual
Sliding Contact, Air Bag

  1. Make sure front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and steering column shaft alignment mark is at the 12 o'clock position.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . Refer to Section 14-01 .
  1. Remove steering wheel (3600) as described.
  1. Remove instrument panel steering column cover (04459) , upper steering column shroud (3530) and lower steering column shroud .
  1. Disconnect air bag sliding contact harness connector down column side.
