Can anyone explain Fords method to their madness?

Call me stupid but today I saw a picture of a s197 3v cylinder head....all this time I thought it was a DOHC with two lobes on the intake cam and one lobe on the exhaust cam, well I was shocked to learn its a SOHC with 3 lobes per cylinder 2 intake one exhaust. I always thought variable cam timing not only meant ability to advance and retard timing but also lobe separation between intake and exhaust wich seems impossible to me to be done on this particular set up. Does anybody know why chose this set up, or where to find any design sheets or blueprints on these cylinder heads?? Also weird intake runner, this whole head design is baffling. :shrug: :shrug: :shrug:
