Im trying to time my car but after I set the engine at tdc on compression stroke and put rotor at number cylinder 1 terminal the car wont start. It will sputter for a second and stall if i keep the gas pedal floored. It starts fine and idles with it in. I think the problem is that there isnt enough timing advance with the spout out to keep her running. So can I just start the car with it in and advance it till the car stays running with the spout out and then time it. The reason i ask is because the shop manual says to start the car with spout out, time it, then shut the car off and reinstall spout.

Just have someone crank with spout out and turn the distributor till it starts. Make sure its right on the money with tdc and rotor position before you do that.

Of course you can start the car with the SPOUT connector installed (while turning the dizzy to get it to catch).
It's easier to time a warm engine.

Good luck.
