I have a 97 GT convertible that the ECM got wet in and now the car won't start. Can I swap with any ECM or do I need one programmed to match my VIN so the security chip in the key will work?
It's a 4.6 and the original ECM got wet as well, it seems like there might be a cover missing or something.

The 96-98 the PATS does not have to be programmed to match the cluster as the 99-04 MY's. The key will need to be re-programmed. BUT there's a user procedure that allows the user it themselves. The procedure takes 45 minutes to do, so it won't work for someone to steal your ride.

Recommend getting a PCM that matches the transmission (manual/automatic).
