I am preparing to wire in a aftermarket gauge pod/cluster and was looking at the wiring diagrams for the factory wiring. I ran across a dark green/light green wire for the coolant temp relay. What does this relay do and will I need it?
#13 I been looking at about five schematics and don’t see this relayThere is no coolant relay. The temp sensor is just pin 7 to pin 46.
Can you post a pic of what you are looking at?
There isn’t one
This is the temp sensor for the ecu
And this is the temp guage for the cluster
I would assume they just mean to tap into the red/white wire from the temp sensor.
Just a straight up cluster. I have removed the wires from the connectors to wire to the pod however that one temp relay wire caught my eye.Without know king what exactly you are wiring in I can’t really say. The light green/ yellow wire going to pin 7 is for the ECU. The other one only drives the stock temp guage.
This is the diagram I have so I wonder if this is a mistake. Do 90 up have electric fans?So here is an interesting one...
I took these from my Chilton Manual, under the 1989 section.
So the first pic is the instrument cluster connectors. The fifth label from the left is labelled 450 - DG/LG, the description says HOT WATER TEMP RELAY TO SENDER. All sounds the same as what the OPs document says. Here is where it gets interesting. I follow the wire in the diagram and it goes directly to the Seat Belt Warning Chime in the second pic where it is labelled 450 - DG/LG and description is SEAT BELT WARN. INDIC. LAMP FEED.

That’s what I was thinking however I thought I’d ask.Only the 2.3L has a cooling fan relay. The temp sensor is still wired like the 5.0.
I’ve pulled these harnesses apart. There is no relay. It’s a simple resistance sensor. A relay doesn’t even make sense electrically speaking
