Every shop says 3.73's over 4.10's

Been going to a lot of local performance shops and just checkin stuff out, I've talked to a lot of the guys about gears and so far everyone has said to definately pick 3.73's over 4.10s for my 02 GT 5spd daily driver. They all said that 4.10s pull a lot harder but the 3.73's are still a HUGE improvement and very fun while still maintaining a pretty high comfort level and having the option of cruising at not-so-bad RPM's on the highway. Opposite of what everyone here says but I'm still debating.
I agree with them also, i will be switching to 3.73's because the stock gears a re not good for this car and i dont want to lose top end with 4.10's.

p.s- i will be adding a superchager later :nice:

what speed do you cruise at on the highway, I hold 80 mph and it is perfectly comfortable. Only 2600 rpms at that speed. Then, while still in 5th gear I put the pedal down and she GOES.

If your speedo shows 80mph at 2600rpm in 5th with the 4.10 gears, it is way off! You're actually going only about 70mph at that rpm!

At 80mph (real speed) your rpm should be more like 2900rpm with the 4.10 gears...

Well its your choice but 410's as a daily driver is fine thats why you have 5 gears. On the highway just leave her in 5th when someone wants too run drop it in 4th and your tires will bark the R's go up and bam hit 5th before you know your at 120mph easliy.

The thing to keep in mind is that Stangnet is very drag-race oriented.
Now that's the funniest thing I've heard in a while. :rlaugh: This place ain't drag race oriented. It's a friggin playground for kids who own Mustangs who occasionally want to talk about a technical issue or two - but about the only technical issues you'll find are, "Which gears should I buy?" or "What exhaust sounds best?", "Which wheels do you like best?", "Where can I buy this?" etc, etc, etc - the rest is basically just BS - such as, "Who would win?" or "Just raced a Yugo - owned" or something similiar to this.
Then there's the talk section where you can talk about soap, lawn care, movies and/or TV shows, home repair, how to get the smell of rotten food out of your refrigerator, how somebody's girlfriend/dog/cat/aunt/uncle/brother/sister/mother/father puked/farted/crapped all over them, etc, etc, etc.
Stangnet is not drag race oriented. Try ModularDepot :nice:

Why don't people remember that in late '01 mustangs started getting the 3650 transmission? My gearing is different than both of yours, so YES, I am at 2600 rpms at 80 mph.

3.73's=mostly for 5.0's! also good for those who are gas nuts who like to save gas and have some gear fun!

4.10/4.30's=recommended for 96-04 stangs! the RPM band is much wider than the old 5.0 so 4.10's will get u to the higher RPM band much quicker than 3.73's. if u are gonna supercharge, get 3.73's. i dont know if 4.10's will be alright for superchargers but i noticed some people do it. ask them :) if u dont care for gas mileage (like me) and will not supercharge, get 4.30's!

The thing to keep in mind is that Stangnet is very drag-race oriented. So you need to consider that when reading opinions. IMO, for a car that will not be seeing the track and will be seeing the highway, 4.10's are too much gear. It is all about the application of the car. However, keep in mind, that I am still happily running on stock gerars ... so again consider the source of the opinion. Good luck with whatever you decide.
:nice:
Mine sees the track maybe once a year. It's daily driven on the highway and city, seeing speeds AVERAGING 90 mph going to work everyday. It also has 116k miles on it, most of them with the stock gears.

I went with 4.10's, and now 5th gear pulls on the freeway. Gas mileage hasn't changed dramatically as long as you keep your foot out of it. Keep in mind that with steeper gears, the motor doesn't have to work as hard to keep the mass of the car moving. With 3.27's my car took FOREVER to get up to 120mph in 4th. Now it's effortless. The car is just much more fun to drive. Power is there when you need it. And traction isn't any less than with the 3.27's. And being able to do a 3rd gear scratch is a nice feeling. :D

And yet you took the time to write in on this (according to you) BS forum...no need to insult those of us who love mustangs but aren't mechanics or hardcore racers.

3.73 are a waste of time in a 4.6 powered mustang remember we dont have the power down low that a 5.0 has and the 4.10s even the field . i have 4.10s and they are not to much on the highway at all imo i could have gone w/4.30s and been safe as well . believe me once you feel the pull of the 4.10s and the drivability you wont be sorry w/them

Now what is the big reason why 4.10s are not recommended with supercharger applications? Is it because of the increased torque and will a supercharged 4.6 2v damage its rear end with 4.10s? Thanks.

Not really damage. I think it's the fact that with the increased power and such, you'll benefit more with a higher gear ratio. By running 4.10's or higher with a S/C you'll be spending more time shifting and you'll be bouncing off the redline more frequently. I've also heard of people "running out of gear" when running 4.10's or higher with a S/C. You would actually need to shift into 5th to cross the traps.

Remember, gears do NOTHING powerwise for a car. I've handed many stang's their ass with 4.10's with my 3.73 GT, and that's with no weight reduction! Just remember, whenever you go with a higher gear ratio you are ultimately sacrificing your top end to gain acceleration. Once you go past 4.10's you really will have a tough time fighting Civics past 120 mph!
