1979 Mustang Facts
The Mustang went through its third major change in 1979. Retaining the basic dimensions of the Mustang II, the Mustang's wheelbase was increased to 100.4 inches (from 96.2), which translated into a roomier passenger compartment. The 1979 Mustang was a totally new design with no styling references to the original Mustang or Mustang II. Two body styles were available, a two‑door sedan and the three‑door hatchback

Sharing many components from the Fairmont/Zephyr platform, the 1979 Mustang was the first Mustang to use a strut‑type front suspension.

The Cobra option was available with the turbocharged 2.3 liter four or the 5.0 liter V-8. Both engines were fitted with a sport-tuned exhaust system with bright extensions and the new TRX suspension system. Other Cobra features include color-keyed quarter window louvers, a black grille, and black lower body panels. Large “Cobra” decals were used on each door. Cobra and those that used the 2.3 liter turbocharged engine, also got a front-facing non-functional hood scoop. In the interior, Cobra models got a engine-turned dash along with a Cobra snake emblem and a three-spoke Sport steering wheel. In addition, a large snake hood decal was an extra-cost Cobra option.

There was also the Sport option. It could be had with any engine and it included the black-out treatment used on the Cobra, a continuous bodyside molding and on the 5.0 liter engine model, a rear hood bulge extending from the front to back.

Engine availability was similar to the Mustang II's. The 2.3 liter four‑cylinder was standard equipment, the German made 2.8 liter V‑6 optional and the 5.0 liter V‑8 was still available as the only V‑8 option. For the first time, the 5.0 was fitted with a single‑belt (serpentine) accessory drive system.

An turbocharged version of the 2.3 liter four cylinder was optional as well, generating 132 hp. Ford was forced to withdraw it for a variety of mechanical ills after the 1980 model year.

The old 200 ci inline six (3.3L) replaced the German V-6 midway through the model year.

An effort was made to improve the Mustangs handling. The optional handling suspension came with a 0.50 inch rear stabilizer bar (0.56 inch with the 2.8 V‑6). The 0.50 inch bar was also standard with the 5.0 ci engine. More significant was the suspension package that was included when the Michelin 190/65R 390 TRX tires and TR 390 forged aluminum wheels were ordered. Shocks, springs and stabilizer bars were tuned to the TRX wheels/tires to provide excellent handling, especially on smooth surfaces.

The Ghia model still stressed luxury with usual interior upgrades and Ghia emblems.

There were three Mustang models to choose from—the base model, the Ghia and the performance-oriented Cobra which was offered only as a three-door (non-Ghia) hatchback. The Ghia model offered a more luxurious interior and Ghia-only options. The Ghia model still stressed luxury with usual interior upgrades and Ghia emblems.

The top engine was the 5.0 liter. It was basically carried over intact from 1978. All 5.0 liter engines came with a single-exhaust system, aluminum intake manifold, two-barrel carburetor (California-bound cars got a variable-venturi unit for 143 hp), single-snorkel air-cleaner, an aluminum water pump and a new-for-1979, single V-ribbed accessory drive belt system. The 5.0 liter V-8 was available with a four-speed SROD (Single Rail Over Drive) transmission in 49 states. It was an aluminum unit and it was offered in fairly wide ratios—3.07, 1.72, 1.00 and 0.70. Ford’s C-4 three-speed automatic was available in all 50 states. All 5.0 liter cars have a larger 7.5 inch rear end—which was adequate for a car with 140 hp.

All Mustangs were fitted with front disc brakes and a rear drum system. The front discs measured 10 inches and the rear drums 9.0 inches.

There was a variety of 13 and 14 inch wheels available on the Mustang. All these wheels used four lugs.

The best wheels available were the TRX wheels which were quite unique. They measured 390 mm, or 15.35 x 5.9 inches wide. The wheel's odd size meant that they could only be fitted with special tires manufactured by Michelin. The TRX wheels were optional and standard on the Cobra and Pace car.

A special run of 10,478 replica Pace Car Mustangs was assembled to commemorate the specially prepared Mustangs chosen to pace the Indy 500. These were built between April and July, 1979. Although the actual Pace cars were all powered by the 5.0 liter V-8, the replicas could either be the 2.3 liter turbocharged four or the 5.0 liter V-8. The last time Mustang was chosen to pace the Indy 500 was in 1964 and at that time, about 100 pace car replica Mustangs were built.

Included with the Pace Car package were halogen headlights with removable bulbs, front air-dam with foglights, rear decklid spoiler, non-functional hood scoop (facing backwards), blacked-out trim, special front grille, dual orange molding on blacked out bumpers, Recaro seats in black-and-white trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and engine-turned dash. Also included was a sunroof, center console with digital clock, AM/FM stereo radio with cassette or 8-track, interval wipers, dual-remote outside mirrors and a special Indianapolis Motor Speedway rectangular plaque.

Options on the Pace Car included automatic transmission for the 5.0 liter V-8, air conditioning, tinted glass, four-way adjustable seat for the driver, cruise control, power door locks, rear window wiper/washer and a rear defroster. Standard was the leather-wrapped steering wheel; however, when the optional tilt wheel was ordered, leather was not available.

Three specially prepared cars were used at Indy as pace and parade vehicles. These three cars were fitted with T-tops by Cars and Concepts. Engine-wise, the 5.0 liter V-8s were used, but with modifications. A Holley (R-6989A) from a 1973 Ford was used on an aluminum high-rise intake manifold and a chrome air cleaner from a 1974 Ford police car. Internally, 1971 351 Windsor heads with 1.84 intake and 1.54 exhaust valves were used along with 1969 Boss 302 connecting rods and forged-steel crankshaft. The rest of the valvetrain included 289 HiPo valve springs and a 1970 Boss 302 solid lifter camshaft. Pistons were forged aluminum TRW with Speed Pro rings. Jack Roush put the engines together. All three cars used modified C-4 automatic transmissions.

Two of the original three Pace cars are at the Roush Transportation Museum.

That info seems to be incomplete, since there's no mention of the Pace Car-specific paint color that I can find in that mess, although it does confirm that the black is 1C.

You guys are great! Thank you!

HotCobra, do you own that one? If so- NICE! The black on the hood appears glossy, I always thought it was flat. Maybe I'm just confusing it with the flat black decal on the '85/'86 hood?

*OR* is the hood scoop not painted, but molded in black?
