I test-drove my old GT! Should I get it back?

I sold my 96 GT over 3 years ago, and have regretted it ever since. Somehow I found my wife and she still wanted to marry me even without the Mustang....

I have been driving a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 since then. My wife's parents live close to the people that I sold my 96 GT to, and so occasionally we would drive by and see my old car sitting in their driveway. Well, a few days ago we were driving down that same road again, and I saw a for sale sign in my old car! I could get it back! We pulled over and looked it over. On the outside it was almost the same, except for on the driver's side where the owner's brother scraped the door and rear quarter panel with a 5th wheel trailer. There isn't any real dent, and the scrape does not go down to the metal, but it is still there. It could look a lot better with some rubbing compound, but that is not a deal breaker. Anyway, we took it for a test drive and I miss it. It is so fast! The AC does not work, (hole in one of the lines), the speedometer does not always pick up the speed (it did after 50mph), and it has 145k miles on it now.

The owner wants $4400, KBB puts fair price at around $3300. (I sold it to him for $7500 by the way) I said I could do something around $3000 but he did not seem too excited by that I would love to have my mustang back, but the owner over the last few years was not as good to it as I would have been. I am sure he drove it in a way that it should not have been driven.

I would like to have it back, but am I better off just waiting until I can get a nice 96-98 with low miles and do all the work to it again? Or should I get back into it for sentimental reasons?

For reference, these are the mods and work I did:

Full PI swap
LTs and full exhaust
4.10s
U/D Pullies
KN FIPK Intake
Plenum
Throttle Body
Mach 1 springs and struts
Short shifter (that still feels so nice and tight)

What do you all think?

If I ever had the chance to get my Laser Red 96 Aero back I would. He is asking a bit much but with the full PI swap done that does save allot of work on another one. Plus it has the benifite of knowing who did the work. :D
$3500

With the head swap done and the mods I think its worth going for. I had a ZX2 and lets just say I'm not a fan. I'd definitely go a bit higher for the head-swapped and modded car. Those mods would cost a bunch to do.

Anyway... If you've really missed it... then you have to get it back.

Show up with 3500 in cash and show it to him. Have an extra 250 in your back pocket just in case.

hell yeah man go for it. i sold my 98 about three years ago and if i could have found the guy who owned it now i would try and buy it back but.. i bought a 96 last week for 1500/ good thing about your old car is u know who did the work on it.

I text messaged the current owner saying I had $3000 cash ready to go. I did not hear anything back so I guess he is thinking? I hope that is a good thing.
You are not offering enough and now shot yourself in the foot. Text him back what he needs to let the car go. He is gonna hit you at $4000. Tell him you wana come see it again and just like 007 said have $3500 ready to go. Whip it out at the same time you tell him all you have is $3500. Give $250 to your girl and if he refuses the $3500 look to your girl and kinda wimper saying how much you would love to have your baby back but dont have enough money. She pulls out $250 saying its all she has and the dude will jump on it.
He may jump on the $3500 but it has to be waved in his face.
Money talks. :nice:

+1! :nice:

After a few text messages he said he would do $3750.

I am not sure I want to do this. Money would be tight until I sold my Escort.

Are you guys sure I should not wait and find another GT in a few years that is unmolested and do it all again? I did all the work myself... and kind of had fun doing it.

We are heading back up that way tomorrow, so we could make something happen tomorrow or we will be waiting another week.

well look at it this way, if you don't do it are you going to wish you had? I know in my situation, I'm a college student working my way through school, and i paid 12,000 dollars for my stang, and that car payment sometimes makes money a little tight, but when i get behind the wheel of my stang it makes it totally worth it. :)

so just think of the pros vs cons, and weigh your decision on that

:D
