Interchangeable torque converters???

hey my tranny seems like its slipping and it makes a loud whinning noise.
my mechanic told me it was the torque converter. My question is if i could get a converter from the junk yard that would fit mine. i have and 88 5.0 convertable GT. I was thinking maybe a converter from a 5.0 thunderbird because theres about 5 t birds in a junk yard about 10mins from my house. Is it interchangeable??? any other ford converters that would fit my tranny???
also my mechanic told me i have c6 tranny??? I thought i had a aod. The reason im doing this because i need my car asap and only have about 80 - 100 dollars to spend till like a month from now.

you car is an AOD and i am sure you can get a convert at auto zone or any part store for not that much.

if your mechanic thinks its a C6, i'd be looking for a new mechanic. Unless it was swapped out before you got it. Are you planning on doing the work yourself? If you aren't, the labor is going to cost you more than you plan on speniding on the replacement converter.
