Lost the clutch - input shaft?

1988 5.0HO GT

I lost the clutch. When I depress the pedal about and inch...it like goes to the floor easily and sounds like a deep "ratchet recoil" and it feels like a stripped cog. I first thought it was the ratchet cable adjustment, but you should be able to drive the car without the clutch and it will not take a gear with the engine running. A buddy said it might be a broken input shaft. Any idea what I'm looking at?

Could be a broken cable also.

I agree that a broken cable or stripped quadrant are most likely. Confirm and fix that (it'll be real easy with someone pushing the pedal while someone watches the cable under the car and/or the quadrant).

Highly doubt it's the input shaft.

I'd bet cable,quadrant, pressure plate or throw out bearing before an input shaft
