on 87-89 *i think, the bottom of the right of the cluster has the empty square with the low coolant, gas, wiper fluid etc. the part behind it that actually lights up those areas wtf is it called and where does it plug into?

Agreed, but id rather have the piece/ lights there then not, any picks of what it looks like from behind? And i dont seen where they would mount to it otherwise just hang.
 
Sounds like you're talking about the Low Fluid Warning Lamps that came standard with the GT cluster. I believe the GT cluster included the section where the lamps plugged into. You would also need the Low Fluid Warning module and associated switches in order for the lights to operate.
 
The instrument cluster bezel on the LX will have the 'lenses' for the lights, but I don't remember if the actual cluster has the section where the light bulbs mount to. The Low Fluids module will probably have to be sourced from salvage or the like.
