need help with trans!

i have a 99 cobra and i blew out the trans well atleast thats what the shop i took it to is telling me and i do trust them but they havent even opened it up (hmmm) so i guess first what kinda trans is it? if i get a new one what kinda of mods can i do to help this not happen again, and does anyone no of and good web sites to check for one. thanks in advance for the help.
