Need spare tire help please

I sent my boy away to college with new GT brakes on the front of his 2.3 LX. He calls with a flat tire, and tells me the spare will not fit, that it hits a bolt somehow. He is car illiterate and can't tell me if it's the strut bolt, caliper bolt, or something else. Is there a difference between the donut spare on a 2.3 and cars with 11" brakes?

Have him put a rear wheel on the front and the spare tire in the rear

I would guess yes. I know that a 14" rim will not fit on a GT car due to the brakes. If it was a four cylinder car I would bet that the spare will not work.
