Safe Wheel Spacer?

Hey guys, I've heard all the horror stories, what is the biggest wheel spacer I can run without make the studs too short to be safe? Not looking for anything drastic, maybe 1/4" or 1/2", is getting longer studs an option? and where can I get them.

ARP makes longer studs...

we run an inch spacer and a half inch spacer on the race car with radials (we run a 5/8" stuf though)

Ok, but what is the most I can go on stock length studs? At what point would it become unsafe.

I have a 1/4 on my fronts and that's about as far as I'd go. That puts the stud right at the end of the nut
