So the 86 gts hav ehte same 225 hp HO fuel injected 5.0 as the 87-up cars?

all 86 5.0's were a speed density fuel injected motor, had the non high-out put heads (e6 casting) and were rated at 200 hp i believe.

In '85, the 5-speed cars had a carbeurated motor with e5 heads(the same as e7's) and were rated at 210 horsepower
the automatic cars had CFI and were rated at 165hp on the early 85 cars and 180hp on the late 85 cars

I dont get why they would drop power them raise back up. I had a guy tell me that there are some rare carbed 86's.

They were under the emissions gun and decided that it would be a great idea to try a set of swirl port heads on a Mustang. Ford genius that ranks right up there with the Pinto and the Mustang II.

I thought the 86's came with 175 hp? I dunno, I saw it on a production number chart somewhere. And the carbed 85's had more. But yes I do know for a fact that the stick 85's were carbed. I had one.

1985

5-spds got a 4bbl 5.0 making 210HP
AOD's got a CFI 5.0 making 180HP.

1986
All got EFI, and made 200HP.
The HP may be down, but the torque curve was a lot flatter and therefore more usable than the '85 motor.

Stock for Stock

Not to beat a dead stang but......

The 86 does not make as much power as the 87+ cars .. this is due to the heads and cam mainly.... 1986 was the first year for EFI

Heads, TB and Upper intake were smaller.

85,86,87 and 88 had E5ZE-6250-AA camshafts.
E8ZE-6250-CA (88-90)
F1ZE-6250-AA (91-93)

and for the Cobra
F3ZE-6250-CA

If 85's had 210hp, 86's 200, 87-88's 225hp, 89-93 205hp(after ford revised the hp ratings) and 94-95's had 215hp

It looks like everybody is in the ballpark

"HO" refers to the firing order and the cam, not the heads. Also the '85 heads are not 100% the same as E7s, they have larger combustion chambers and yield slightly lower compression numbers than with E7s.

Aside from the heads and the EFI parts, the downfall of the '86 engines is that the pistons have no valve reliefs, since the heads didn't have much valve lift to begin with. In '87 they switched back to the same piston/head setup as '85, but revised the combustion chambers to give the engine a tad more compression.
