So I have two 4i'd t-tops that both want money at least as much as my wife.:nonono:

I've been doing a little side work on evenings and weekends to keep up to date on my bill hoard. While out painting the front end of a chevy superduty, the guy that owns this small shop shows me a '63 Impala convertible that he is doing a complete rebuild for a "friend".

He wants me to paint it........Not only paint it, but strip it down to the metal, help him with the bodywork, block the entire car and all of the rest of the little sht necessary to paint it. One good thing about it being his project is that I don't have to search out the little clips, retainers, bolts and stuff.

I like the quick turn around stuff like collision repair, two or three nights and it's done. This would not be a two or three night project though.

With my two cars needing so much, I'm kind of caught in a catch 22 thing here. My cars need time from me AND money, lots and lots of money. This Impala has the potential of paying a sizeable sum, but every night for the next two months I will have to drive across town to work on it. Hummmm.......

I'm going out to his place tomorrow night to shoot the front end on an F250, I'm thinking I should at least talk to him about it. Money will be the main subject in my thoughts. From what he has said about the vehicle from its' past and what the owner wants in the end, we're talking about a LOT of work. They will have to be willing to pony up quite a bit of money to get me.

One thing that makes me think the owner might be serious is that he will pay for quality paint. It's a beginning for our conversation.

I don't know if he's serious enough for a real top quality job like as in a Riddler Award paint job. That would be a big payday on my part. I can do that kind of work, but it's sooooo time consuming. Plus we get into the five figure paint jobs at that stage.

Why am I posting this? If I do this, litttle will be done on either of my two cars. Just wanted you to know what's going on if I seem to drop off the map for awhile.

If I can get paid enough to do it, I'll post pictures of the project.

Gotta have money to support your habits!!!

If it's a sizable payday for toys, two months is nothing.

Just my opinion.

Where do you have to work on this thing to get it ready for paint? Does he have the facility, and tools to make this work for you?

If the hit and runs that you want aren't there for you Dave... (for whatever reason,.....it's not like people stopped crashing into each other) Then you may wanna consider a more "involved" version of what you're capable of. Take a draw from this guy, Give yourself a "day off" every now and then, lay out some well defined goals/expectations for the both of you, and name your price.
Your work speaks for itself Dave,...You're making it easy on the guy by allowing him to maintain control /possession of the car that you have to travel to get there. Make it easy on yourself by profiting from your skill.

Sounds like a gateway to 'Dave's Custom Paint Shop'- Even if it was only open on weekends-I think you would do very well

Edit: and I would slowly mail you a complete Sn car .. One piece at a time :)

Alright, some things I will do for money......

This is the car in question, it's a '62 chevy Impala SS convertible with a 409. Hot freaking car.

I agreed about two hours ago to paint this car. I will make 4k doing that. The owner got the deal, not me, other than this car will bring my name up in the local wealthy people.

I spent a good half hour with one of the local dealership owners tonight. I had painted his truck. He was happy with the results.

This Impala will set me up to do whatever I want to Doby or Roby.

I will spend the time necessary to make it as close to perfect as possible. The current owner wants it to be his driver. This is a $100k vehicle, and he wants it to be his driver.....

Doby will be a very happy little bit*h thanks to this red Impala.

Anyone want a paint progress thread of a '62 Impala SS?

You should still see progress on the other cars since I've been working on them between coats of paying jobs.

By the way, I don't mean Riddler Award winning, the owner isn't that serious, that award goes beyond a simple painter. Though the paint will be, just not all of the other details.

Thanks Chris, I am a little excited. Besides Mike's vehicle, I haven't been involved in a complete side job in about 18 years. That was a '57 corvette. I've done a lot of cool cars over the years. This one will rank right up there. There's only about thirty of these left.

The owner will pony up for the relative high dollar materials. I'll give y'all a blow by blow on this one.

I'm planning for it to take seven weeks. This is just to have it in paint. You'll see what I know of are the best techniques for producing a totally bit*hin' paint job.

I agreed to do this for $500 a week plus a "aren't you special" bonus at the end.

BTW, I start on it next Monday. My wife's birthday is next Tuesday, I was thinking of getting her a shirt that says, "My Husband is SPECIAL!". What do y'all think, good gift?

My first car right there!! Well not a 409 nor vert but it was a 62 impala ss. Bought it right before I turned 16. Off course my parents didn't let me drive it until I was almost 17(that they were aware of that is;)).

Mine was a repainted canary yellow with a blue interior(with a partial black dye job)LOL. Super solid car. I really wish I had kept it. Sold it after high school to a guy who wrapped it around a telephone pole. Luckily he survived....the car not so much.

Jeez Todd, I'm so freaking pleased it doesn't have that damn roof with all of its creases!

I have to appreciate what I'm working on, even if it's not a Ford. This is a real "rare" car. Like marijuana, it's a gateway drug for further progress on my little foxes!:nice:
