Strange Noise

Hey everyone, I have a question about my 98 v6 Mustang.

I drive it to class roughly half an hour away twice a week, and the other day it began to make an odd noise. I live in the midwest, so the current weather is pretty horrible, and I'm not sure if that has something to do with it

The problem, is as follows: When starting in first gear from a stop, the car makes a deep grinding noise. The sound also occurs when I hit the clutch when in the process of upshifting. the sound could be coming from the transmission, but I'm not quite sure. It seems as though it is caused by the usual vibrations of the car, which are more prominent upon accelerating from a stop, or when there are pops upon the clutch being stomped. It sounds almost like there is something rubbing against the moving gears, but I also cant confirm that the sound is coming from the transmission.

Has anyone experienced this before? Am I screwed?
