stupid move, now need help with t5

hello, noob here. but hey, you learn from mistakes right?

ok so when I removed the tailshaft from my t5, I forgot to put it in neutral first X_x. is there a way to put the t5 in neutral without putting the tailshaft back on? it's giving me a hard time trying to out it on. it seems the shift lever rod is sticking out too much and so I can't get the shifter block to line up with the hole where the roll pin goes. any help is greatly appreciated and sorry for the dumbness.

Is the top cover off? Just physically move the gear.

If the cover is on, you can still move th shift rod. If it's sticking back, you can tap it forward. Neutral is with the shift pin sticking straight up and you can twist it left and right slightly.

top cover is still on. I tried hitting it with a rubber mallet but I was afraid to hit it too hard for fear of breaking a fork. should I do it with a metal hammer instead?

You should be able to move it with your hand....dont beat it with a hammer or youll bend or break something possibly.
