Thinking about losing the 4.10s and going w/ 4.30s

Lets say I work in the automotive field, and drag race as a hobby. I also tend to listen and learn from those that know.

For arguments sake, lets say your friends red line is 6,200 RPM. You do know that you should NOT be shifting AT redline, just because your red-line mayb e 6200 right...you're loosing power by the time you hit redline, you should be shifting before that...soooooo technically, your friend should be shifting into 5th :p

Then for our sakes, please do not ever drag race your car. Cause you will never shift past 5500 and always grace us with your pitty threads on why your car runs bad times.

Ok this went south... I'm done posting in here. I can see now why you are not liked by some on this forum. Have you even run your car at the track? I dont see any time slips anywhere in your profile. And when you blow your car up thinking its cool to take it up to and past red line, dont be making any threads yourself talking about needing a new engine.

Helty hope i helped you with the calculator and what not, good luck making yoru decision.

Frankly, whether or not I am liked doesnt affect me.

If you want to question my times and if I have ever been to the track visit, www.svt4u2try.com and they are on that. If you have anything else pm me or on aim as i refuse to let this thread go to crap because you feel the need to question my car and my knowledge. :nice:

You really CANT get better gas mileage with 4.10s than you can with 3.27s. No way. higher RPMs = more gas burned.

that is a half truth with many facts missing.

sure higher RPMs is a factor in gas mileage BUT IT"S NOT THE ONLY FACTOR

load plays a big part in fuel mileage to. with 4.10's there is less load on the motor at highway speeds. this reduction in load with 4.10's at highway speed makes up for most of the extra rpm's

I have tested this on my car with 3.27's and 4.10's using the WDS scan tools fuel economy test. I avraged about 2 mpg less on the highway and about the same in town.

Again not the whole story here.

a few facotrs need to be looked at when you pick shift points.

1. engine redline

2. where power starts to drop off.

3. where will I be in the power curve AFTER I shift.

with the stock 3.27's I found I did best when I would shift at about 6k rpm's If I shifted where the power started to fall off I would be at way to low rpm's in the next gear.

with the 4.10's I find it best to shift around 6k 1-2 and about 5800 2-3 and around 5600 3-4

svttech76, you seem to have a lot of knowledge with rear ends, and if Im not mistaken you are a rear-end specialist?

what are your opinions on the Detroit pieces for a daily driver who frequents the track? Will be launching on MT ET Drags with 300-325+hp (my goal). What about the Ford Trac-Lok? I hear thats the best bang for your buck and its also rebuildable. Just looking for some solid info, thanks!

you will hook up better with the detroit trutack a detroit locker is probally the best for a street car because it will allow for one wheel to turn faster around corners.

the only problem with these setups is you get aome noise when turning. Personally I think it's worth the noise if you are serious about getting good times.

I suggest you open a new thread on this subject.

Gears don't break the axle. You can snap an axle with 3.27's just as much as with 4.10's. The amount of Horsepower, + stickier tires= failed 28 spline rear. The gears dont cause it.

Ok before I read any further down... COMPLETE AND UTTER :bs: . Go do some reading before you reply to this man :nice: ....now on to the rest of the thread....

WOW, alot of arguing and junky info in here....both of the debaters have truthful as well as false statments.

You DONT want to cross the trapps @ "redline" unless your "shiftpoint" is there. Ideally you want to cross the trapps @ the RPM you shift at.

IMHO Helty you dont need 4.30s on a DD, unless your trying to make this a drag car...but if you want them then go for it.
But ill be more than happy to come up there and teach you a lesson with my 3.73s anytime you want :p .

One more thing, with the taller tires...thats all fine a dandy to make you cross the trapps at the right RPM, but do you never plan on going with street tires? Once you get some power, your going to be pushing that bottom end to more RPM than it needs to be seeing if you run anything other than the MTs....I wouldnt want to be limited but I dont know your plans.

I drive about 20 miles per day MAX during the week, usually about 5, seriously. In all honestly I really would sacrifice daily driving manners for a few tenths off my ET, I really love going to the track that much :nice:

Bring it Bish

Once I get my ass-end built, no street tires @ the track, really. Just me, the red dragon, and my two pals, the M. Thompson twins

Oh, and Im dead serious about that T-56 Viper spec swap (WAY down the road of course). 4.30s with that mother and I'll get back some street manners.

I think he means driving with a shorter tire on the street.. you'll be racking up more RPM's..

I thought you drove more than that
I drive to and from campus once on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Twice on Friday. If I do any driving around town it adds up to about 20 miles tops. A weekend trip to LR and back is about 70miles, no biggie. I already have 4.10s, 4.30s isnt going to be a huge leap for me. Even on street tires around town, I can deal with it. Remember, Im not cool enough to street race. My car will never* see more than 4500rpm on the street ;)

Here's my commute to and from class each morning: http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?new...z=Conway+ar&country=us&tcsz=72032&tcountry=us

Better watch those miles racking up :rlaugh:

Wow, your lucky :(. I drive 45miles ONE way to work...3-4 times a week :nonono: . So since your pretty much all intown then sure thats a good gear...defentaly even easier on teh clutch. If I did that sort of driving I may have went 4.10s...

But be prepared to get destroyed off the light durring normal driving by all the traffic (non WOT) haha..I notice that the steeper I go, the harder it is to keep up with traffic W/O really getting some RPMs and attracting attention. But maybe im not being aggressive enough  . You two have that problem?
BTW get some vids after the gears...I want to see that crap sideways off into the other lane of traffic from 1st-3rd :nice:
