I am working on installing the timing cover and water pump on my 302 engine.
I had read that some of the bolts contact coolant and require pipe dope or thread sealant.

I cannot see any place on the 302 that bolts can contact sealant, maybe the 289 is what was being referred to.

Hi,
There is a bolt or two on the W/P that passes through a coolant passage. I've never used the tape, but, have used the anti-seize. It acts as both a anti-galling and sealant.
Good luck!

Ive never put sealant on any of the water pump/ timing cover bolts and have not had any issues.. last time I reinstalled my heads I didn't bother to put any sealant on those either.
